Does anyone know whether newer firmware updates fix the NEC 3540A writer's ability to: (a) copy/backup the latest copy-protected DVDs? (In the review, it seems to have some problems with certain copy protections). (b) read 99 minute CDs? What I am still trying to grasp is which of the following ones holds true: (1) a newer firmware can change the drive's ability to bypass latest copy protections at all in order to make a DVD backup, or (2) if bypassing copy protections is solely dependent on the drive itself, namely on the hardware, i.e., the chipset (like Mediatek chipsets in LiteOn drives do an excellent job with copy protections), or (3) if proper software (e.g., DVDFab, CloneDVD, etc) will backup DVDs with latest SafeDisk protections anyway, even with the NEC 3540A drive (which can only backup up to SafeDisk v2.5 with Alcohol 120% according to CDR-Info's review).. I am thinking to buy in a couple of months either a NEC-3540A, or a NEC4550 (need to read the review), or a LiteOn DVD writer (which are better with protections), and I can not decide due to the above considerations... Or should I just wait for the Blue-Ray disk writers to come out? How long will that take, and how long do you think that DVD writing will be alive for? Experts of the forum, please advise...
