Just wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem as myself? As follows:

On my second (backup) system running Windows XP Pro SP2 all latest updates to all apps/drivers/BIOS/firmware where applicable, apon insertion of physical media (be it CD/DVD) Windows Explorer sometimes does not detect the media, whereas application software can still see the contents, which means I cannot view the disc, only extract its contents etc... Drives are JLMS XJ-HD166S and PLEXTOR PX-712A both newest revisions.

I beleive Norton AntiVirus 2005 has something to do with this, but works fine on primary system.

Have tried letting Windows re-install both drives but to no avail. There must be a driver of some sort that occasionally conflicts?

Specs of the system in question are:
____________________
Intel Pentium III ~733MHz
384MB PC-133 SD-RAM (CL-2)
IBM 2178 Mainboard with VIA Apollo Pro 133A System chipset (****)
180GB IBM Deskstar 180GXP 7200rpm 8MB FDB HDD
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 6.1
Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 500 128MB DDR2-RAM
____________________

All latest software.

I'm quite puzzled, and have quite a lot of stuff on that system to consider a format at this stage

Any insights are indeed welcome, cheers guys!

When you say "...Windows Explorer sometimes does not detect the media..", do you mean by autoplay?

Clint,

I think I read somewhere this was a VIA chipset issue, but I can't remember, I'll see if I can search it down again.

No, simply browsing files.

Clint,

I think I read somewhere this was a VIA chipset issue, but I can't remember, I'll see if I can search it down again.

There is also a AGP graphics issue with this chipset for anyone who still uses it...

Host Bridge : 1106 0691 C4 00000000  VIA Technologies Inc. VT82C694X Apollo Pro 133A System
ISA (South) Bridge : 1106 0596 12 00000000  VIA VT82C596X

The above is complete chipset info, if that can help anyone?!

Clint,

Have you tried just using Windows drivers and removing the VIA ones?  I think that this helped some in the past.

Yes it is on the Microsoft IDE driver, with the latest VIA 4in1's service pack installed (not Hyperion).
