I was just wondering if the Firmware you use reflects on which Media you should use?

The firmware indicates which writing strategy and at which speed a media will be burned. Many times some drives perform well with a specific media while with other not. A newer firmware can improve this by changing the writing strategy and the recording speed for the specific media.

Some specific firmware revisions, modified, for example for NEC drives, enable 16X writing on specific 8X media.
