This weekend I replaced a CD drive in my Dell 2400 with a BenQ 1620. The BenQ is the master drive. The computer also has a Sony 700A in it that is set to slave. The speakers on the computer work fine when listening to anything via online, but there is no sound when I play a DVD on either drive. The sound was working fine on Friday from both the CD drive that was replaced and the Sony. What happened?

Go to the properties of your drive and make sure the audio check box to be enabled.

Yes, I already checked that. It's checked (on both drives).

Anything else?

You didn't connect the sound connectors on the back of the drive did you? Most all these days simply use the IDE cables...

Also, something else to check, is to double click on your speaker icon, and make sure nothing is muted.

Nothing is muted.

At first I connected the audio cable, because I noticed it was connected with my old computer (which probably didn't have digital). I then disconnected it. I shouldn't need it though, correct?

Normaly the sound can be transfered through the IDE cable. How about unistall the IDE channel you have the problem and reboot?

If your OLD drive had it connect, more than likely your system is old, and needs them to transfer sound.

The old drive had it connected because it was in my 7 year old Gateway computer. Now I'm using a 4 month old Dell. The drive I took out of the Dell didn't have the audio connected.

Did you check in bios if there is any setting for this? Just an estimation.

Well, from the advice on another board, I dumped all of my media players (I had accumulated a few) and installed MPC to be used exclusively.  Low and behold, I now have sound on both players.

Exactly.  Hence the original question.

Wasn't necessary, but thanks.

you never mentioned that you had installed many media players so i couldn't be sure what is the problem at your case, good to hear that your problem is now solved
