hi
I flashed my drive from the 6450 to 6500a.
It worked, roxio reported the drive as nec nd6500a with dl capabilities.
When I tried to burn a data disc with roxio media center it said burn as read only .
So I checked the read only box, but then it reported an error : Cannot write medium, incompatible format, illegal request (05/30/05)
the disc is a dvd dl ritek 2.4x 8.5gb disc, is there a problem with the drive or the disc?

how about using the latest NEC 6500A firmware? I am not very sure which Roxio versison you tested, does it support DL burning?

I burned 2 dual layer verbatim discs today with Nero and the 6500A, no problem. I used firmware 2.81.

its roxio easy media creator 7, and the firmware version is 2.23, but I read somewhere that dl ritek discs have problems.
whats the latest firmware for the drive?

I have upgraded to 2.24 from 2.23 and still the same message , I even tried changing the dl disc to verbatim, it did'nt help still the same message.
Any Ideas?

I have now purchased verbatim DL media and changed the firmware to 2.no ,I have also tried re-installing my roxio burning software but still the same message!
The computer is a HP dv series 1.8 Mhz centrino(Dothan), 1gig RAM.
Roxio recognizes the drive as having DL capabilities.
I work in South Korea and I bought the notebook here.

I tried burning with nero 6.6.0.12 it also says burn process failed here is the log.

I have a same problem. 6450 upgraded to 6500, all software DVDinfopro and Nero shows DL capable but when I try it shows illegal disc and finishes the operation. I have all software versions updated Nero etc.It crashes right after it should burn Layer one. BTW Memorex +R DL.

I had similar problems with the 2.4x Dynex (Ritek) DL discs until I went from 2.02C to 2.03D.

Mine's an OEM(?) 6500a in a Dell Inspiron 700m.

I'm using the 2.4 upgrade firmware which works fine except DL. Maybe I should change the media...
