Hello,

I am running one on my ASUS P5B Deluxe WiF/AP rig... it is based on Intels P965 chipset... Are you running in AHCI mode or IDE mode?  Never tried it in RAID mode... But I expect there is where problems may begin.  Some have reported problem with AHCI.  I did not have those problems with the Pioneer DVR-212D... Just the Samsung SH-S203B... Intels latest Matrix Storage Manager drivers corrected that (check Intels site... I am using the ones from Aug 2, 2007)... Don't recall the version, I'm in the office now.

I have not bought the Pioneer DVR-212D yet I am looking for advice before buying it. So it should work ok as long I run it in IDE mode?

All my drives are SATA.  It was a hard sell for me, but now I am hooked.  The Samsung SH-S203B is the best out right now in my opinion, but if you are going to burn cheap/budget media, the Pioneer DVR-212D is for you.

Yes, I would be using budget media I usually buy them in bulk spindles of 100 of whatever is the cheapest at the time. I burn alot PC games as I am gamer if I did not use cheap media it cost me way to much. I was just concerned with the SATA DVD Burner being dectected as long it will do that it is just fine then it seem Pioneer DVR-212D is for me.

NOTE:  It does not bitset/booktype +R single layer media to DVD-ROM... often a drawback to some... I suggest you burn more DVD-R with it...though it does burn +R very well.

Yes, I read that it cannot set booktype that has not been issue in the past for any my DVDs. I mostly use DVD-R X8 but I will be doing Dual Layer DVDs as well. In Toronto(Canada) this usually what is sold in bulk at local computer shops. I have used the Samsung DVD writter before but I do not think they make the SATA version in biege. I have biege Chemning 601AE steel server case all tweaked out for silent gaming so I am not willing change to black theme. I am usually LG fan I was looking at the LG LG GSA-H62N SATA but I am told it has riplock and therefore cannot go above 5X speed when ripping DVDs. I Looking for SATA DVD writer that well rounded for all tasks and the Pioneer DVR-212D seems fit the bill.

Yep, the LG GSA-H62N has riplock... I have one of them... Currently sitting idle because I had to put the Samsung SH-S203B in it's place.  Best damn drive since the BenQ DW1640.  It's outstanding.  I am running a scan now on my second drive in my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe (AMD x2/nForce4) that has me amazed!!!

BenQ DW1640 didn`t Plextor rebrand those? DVD burners never last to for me as I burn alot games. I had Liteon that burned DVD just great never gave up I ended up selling it with my old computer. It just hated cheap bulk CD-R media would never burn them. I considered Plextor drive but there not popular around here and  expensive,

SithTracy, hi,

tell me, is there still no modified firmware for:

a) the Pioneer drive for bitsetting +R single layer media to DVD-ROM;

b) the LG drive's riplock issue?

What is the best sata drive for quality burns currently, in your opinion?  Is the Samsung better, and why?

No firmware for the DVR-212D series to allow bitsetting single layer +R media yet... LG's continue to be riplocked... The Samsung SH-S203B is the best damn SATA drive available right now.  Great all around burner... Burns MCC 004's very well for me @ 16x.  Does a great job with CD-R too.

hi SithTracy,

how about the samsung's writing quality?  Is it better even than the LG and the Pioneer (I will be using relatively cheap dvd recordables)?  Also, which of the three is currently best for backing up movies?

I find it hard to get used to Samsung having produced a quality drive..

I'd go with the Samsung only if you will be burning to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden +R media... Else, stick with the Pioneer DVR-212D and -R media... That drive does a good job with what I consider garbage media.  If you burn Verbatim or TY, the Samsung is on par with my LG GSA-H62N for DVD+R's.. I give it a slight edge because of it's overall usability.  The GSA-H62N is horrible with CD-R.

And how about their ability to back up movies (or anything else, including the occasional game)?  What order would you place them in according to this?

For DL burning, the Pioneer DVR-212D

For SL @ 16x, the Samsung SH-S203B

For 12x and lower burning speed, the LG GSA-H62N...

Overall the Samsung SH-S203B is my favorite.... But I use many drives.

I still cannot decide, this information seems to make it even harder to choose...

It basically raises another question:

What speed would be the best, quality wise, overall, with standard media?  8x, 12x, or 16x?  And accordingly, which drive should one go for burning mainly SL media?

Many thanks for your responses,

Dimitris
