great site! There seems to be quite a bit about NEC ND-6500A drive unit, one of which was purchased to replace the defective TEAC unit in Toshiba Satellite 1805-S203 laptop.
Physically removing the old DVD/CD unit was no problem, but on boot up all that happened was that the Toshiba logo screen appeared and after a few minutes an error message "IDE #1 error" appeared. Dialogue with both Toshiba and NEC indicates that the ND-6500A is set by default to Master, whereas the laptop needs it to be set as 'Cable Select' (acc to Toshiba) for the laptop to recognise it. Understand that I can download necessary files for recording to 'floopy' disc which can then be used to set up Laptop to accept ND-6500A.

sound like a configuration problem, I don't think firmwares or drivers will help you.
