Hello! I've purchased some philips DVDs and when I try burning some files, nero says it's an illegal disc and i can't continue using them. I've used some other cheaper DVDs and they worked fine, maybe it's because I've bought them in Andorra?

I'm using Nero Express and i have a NEC ND-6500A with the firmware 2.N0 that i updated with NecWinFlash. originally i had version 2.40 but i proved all the other versions and they doesn't work. I have a fujitsu-siemens laptop (amilo M1425).

Here's the log that I got the first time:

Well,

Your log still says that you have firmware 2.40 on the drive.

I suppose version 2.N0 is the last one, but I don't really know. anyway, i had version 2.81 and it still gave me problems burning Philips DVD-R (and I hadn't any problems burning those cheap Minus Platinum DVD-R).

I downloaded these firmwares from the official list here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/6500.html

I've also tried this modified firmware "NEC 6500A 2.24 with Riplock removed, RPC1 and Plus media bitsetting (Liggy). Drive must work as a master drive." and it didn't work neither.

I change the firmware using this app: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/ but I downloaded Win32 GUI because Win32 (that I supposed was the one I had to download because I don't really know what GUI means) is zipped in a folder that doesn't open.

Finally, I live in Spain and until now I've bought all DVD-R in my country and I haven't had any problems burning them. But these Philips DVD-R are from Andorra, that is another country, so I don't know if this is any problem to burn the DVD-R (for the region code I mean, I can burn CD-R bought in Andorra).

I hope this information is enough. Thank you so much in advance.

Jusi.

It's not your drive, it's the discs.  I have personally found the discs under the Philips name are rubbish... not even worthy of drink coasters.

I suspect that the combination of NEC firmware and Philips media is a no-go situation, i would suggest trying other branded media like TDK or Maxell or Taiyo Yuden

The problem is that the firmware does not have a write strategy for this Media ID (MID).  What you should do is get the latest firmware for the ND-6500 which is actually the 203d (master) / 403d (slave).  Then use MediaCodeSpeedEdit to customize the firmware with the MID of your media.

In the attached picture, you'll see that you can replace the "MBI 03RG40" MID with "MBI 01RG40".  If this isn't the exact MID, then you'll have to use DVD Identifier and follow the steps to "import" the MID and overwrite the "MBI 03RG40" MID.  You should then be able to burn your Phillips DVD-R's...please report back if this works for you.

Some other answers to your questions:
1. Use the strategy versions from http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/6500/ to determine the latest.  If you sort by the date, you can see that the 203d / 403d are the latest firmware.
2. GUI stands for Graphical User Interface.  The other one is a command-line application that you can run from a Command Prompt window (aka DOS box).  Just make sure you have the latest v1.31.
3. Just for future reference:  Your drive has master bootcode since it uses firmware 2.xx.  Do NOT change to a slave bootcode to try 4.xx firmwares, or you will get IDE bootup conflicts with your laptop hard drive.
4. That MBI media is Moser Baer India.  More info regarding media quality can be found here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I wouldn't go to the trouble (although it's a plausable solution), the media is absolutely horrible to begin with.  I wouldn't trust anything stored on it.

Yeah I won't disagree with you on the quality of the MBI stuff...but at least they can try.

It's kind of funny how Phillips would allow such crap media to carry their name...guess they're more concerned with royalty licensing these days.

I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this topic. I had the same problem with a Lite-on SHW-160P6S drive. The "illegal disc" problem was caused by a undetected bad download of the PS0B firmware for the drive. The way I discovered the problem was by trying to use the MSCE (Media Code Speed Edit) utility. When I loaded the firmware file there were exactly "no" media IDs shown...nothing. At first I thought maybe the firmware file and the utility were incompatible. Then I decided to try to redownload the firmware from a different site. This time MCSE showed lots of entries; including one that matched my media. So I re-flashed the drive and tried to burn the same video that had so far created four coasters--only this time successfully.

I suspect that the combination of NEC firmware and Philips media is a no-go situation, i would suggest trying other branded media like TDK or Maxell or Taiyo Yuden

When I called HP support about not being able to burn DVD-R media, they actually _suggested_ Phillips DVD-Rs..  I'm on firmware 2.81, and can't burn a majority of DVD-R media currently available (Sony burns at a paultry 2x, Fuji and Memorex don't burn at all).  Does anyone know which firmware will burn a majority of DVD-R media?  Or am I just spinning my wheels with this one?

PS - My Pioneer DVD burner on my home PC works like a charm with all media..  Anyone know if Pioneer makes laptop DVD dburners, and if so, which laptop manufacturers use them?  Does anyone maybe have a list of Laptops that have NEC DVD burners (so I can avoid those models)?

The Philips media is some of the absolute WORST media produced today!

Agreed... Better off finding some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem with Sony DVD-R disks.
quote:

What you should do is get the latest firmware for the ND-6500 which is actually the 203d (master) / 403d (slave). Then use MediaCodeSpeedEdit to customize the firmware with the MID of your media.
Tried this, instruction very clear. Added the id of the Sony DVD-R to the list and generated a new/patched firmware version. Flashed it and reboot.... Ahhh, still the same error. What is best. Just leave it and go and search proper disks, I read advices to buy TDK or Maxell or Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, or does anybody have some hack to get my current combination working? Thanks anyway for the tools, anyone who worked on this!!
Best regards,
CK
Note: Latest firmware on the ND6500 is 203E nowadays.

Hello there,
Despite ample reading in a couple of forums and trying out the hints given there I still can’t find a solution for my problem:

I have a NEC ND6500A CD/DVD reader/ writer (setup as master) and am using Nero to burn. Recently I have bought a new stack of empty DVD-R from my regular supplier, the DVDs I got from them earlier always worked just fine. The new ones don’t anymore. I get the dreaded “illegal disc” error. I’ve checked the Media-ID with DVD Identifier (V.5.01) and the code is RITEKF1

Here’s what I’ve done I have downloaded the latest firmware for the drive (2.03e) and changed that using MediaCodeSpeedEdit (V 1.1.0.2) and of course the clipboard of DVD Identifier.

The entry I changed in the original firmware was the one for RITEKG01.

I have flashed that to the drive using NECWinFlash (GUI V1.39) and restarted. All that worked just fine but had no effect on the problem.

Then I read somewhere that the clipboard of DVD Identifier has a blank first line, so I deleted that and flashed the firmware again. Same effect, that being none!

Now I don’t know what else to try, can someone help?

I attach the Nero log of the last try:
