okay probably answered before here? but when copying audio discs (not on the fly) under "copy options" tab there is choice for source drive/"read speed" and with my plextor and my toshiba dvdrom both seem to default to "maximum" would i end up withbetter copies if i manually set read speed there?

windows xphome-p3 1000-512 ram- plextor plexwriter 2410a -toshiba m1612 dvdrom (i never use dvdrom for anything but playback as its to slow for ripping/copying etc and was under impression i would get better results alwasy using plextor and it sure is faster)

so what the consensus leave at maximum or set speed for reading manually. choices are 4-8-24-32-40 and of course maximum.

i assumed maximum would go up and down in speed based on disc it was reading from?

For audio use always the lower possible reading speed. Nowadays, this seems to be 4x.

You would end up with better copies if you use EAC to rip CDs :-).

I second that. I would DEFINATELY recommend EAC over Nero for ripping wave files!

no one is ripping anything here i am reading for image files of cd's.

i don't rip perfectly good cd's i copy to image file and burn.

not trying to be snooty here as i do appreciate the input but i am aware of eac thanx but my question was to read speed only and it is that i was interested in. along with how it pertains to nero 6.

Well I guess that the way the question was posted, it looked as if you were going after quality of burn. That is why they made the sugestion they did. EAC would give you a better copy by ripping the files off the disc and then burning them to a CD than Nero will. But if you do not care about that, then the answer to your question is : You will always get a better, more acurate copy with slower speeds when it comes to audio.

just so you know, converting a CD-DA to a wave file (or files) = ripping, whether you want to burn that wave file to CD-DA or compress it to mp3 (or some other format).

i agree with Tron: in burst mode, the slower the speed, the more accurate the rip. there might be exceptions with copy-protected CDs but fortunately, i don't have a lot of experience with these :-).
