Dear Forum,

After reading your review, I am considering buying a Plextor PX-716A writer, and I therefore should be grateful if anyone could comment on it’s performance toward burning relatively error free Video DVD-R, together which media best suits this drive?

I am an amateur camcorder used and edit my footage on Sony Movie Studio Editing package, prior to burning onto DVD. Therefore I am after the best possible results that can be viewed on stand alone DVD players (of various makes in PAL format) belonging to family and friends.

Thanks

PS: I also wish to thank CDRInfo for creating what is the best information Forum on DVD Hardware, software and burning issues there is. Keep up the good work it is very much appreciated by a newbe like me

The short answer, YES!.

I have only done two burns since replacing my NEC ND-3500A which did a fine job, but lacked official support for setting the booktype of DVD+R media to DVD-ROM. Plextor supports it, at least through Nero so it work great for me. I sent our kids xmas vid to my folks and this time I am sure it will play on their set-top player.

MP3Mogul will likely add more praise...

However, I did consider the cheaper, but deserving alternative -- The BenQ 1620. If you can find one online, that might be just as good of an option as the Plextor.

digigrove welcome to our forums, thanks for your support.

In short, i would say that Plextor needs to improve the drive's performance, we had tested the drive with 1.03 firmware, already 1.04 has been released with huge change log, it should have improved the writing quality and of course has added DVD-R DL writing (not that matters since media is not out yet)...

BenQ DW1620A is a good choice and a cheap one too
