If you use a 10,000 RPM hard drive (sata) with a 7,500 RPM or even a 5,400 RPM drive, does it defete the purpose of the 10,000RPM drive? And do you feel it's worth the extra cash for one or two 10,000 RPM drives?

Well the only IDE drives (SATA) with 10.000RPM are the WD Raptor drives, very fast but very expensive also

If you use RAID, the performance and size will be limited by the slowest and the smallest.

In a non-raid setup, as I understand it, the SATA ports are independent of each other.

If you mix fast and slow devices on the same (parallel IDE) cable, they should NOT slow to the speed of the slowest, but if used simultaneously, the occupancy from the slower drive will result in more contention loss than if it was faster - though you always try to avoid simultaneous use of drives on the same cable if throughput is a critical issue.
