I noticed that there's a new firmware US0N dated 5/26/04 for the LiteOn 812s.

Has anybody tried yet? The "claim" is that it will allow more media...What media are they talking about?

What will I notice different with this firmware vs. the current US0J which is on my 812s?

Thanks!
Dan from Colorado

I've had a bit of time to play with this firmware and these are my findings:

If you upgrade to USON, it is VERY VERY persistent!

1) If you use this firmware, it will not allow you to speedhack it, and change the write speeds to what you want.

2) If you use this firmware, it will NOT allow a 812 to 832 conversion....

Seems like LiteOn has written a firmware to not allow what it doesn't want........ as far as I'm concerned..... stay FAR away from this firmware....... stay with the US0J... I have flashed back to the J version.......

1/ You can speedhack it. Have you seen the very latest XFlash-X? ;) Anyway, Dan already got the latest burn-adjusted US0N from my website, and you can directly speedhack that, if you don't want to use XFlash-X.
2/ You can still go to a 832S after getting this. There's nothing stopping you. I'm still regularly jumping between US0N and VS__ right now as I'm doing some tests.
3/ My personal recommendation is to go ahead and get US0N. It's a great firmware with many improvements. There's no need to make the 832S conversion yet because DL media is not available, and by the time it is available, VS01 would be horribly outdated (it already is pretty outdated...)

Okay, Thanks CodeGuy! I'll load this one, and adjust what I need speed hacked..... I knew LiteOn was up to something when I flashed it! I appreciate all the work you guys are doing, and for posting here on CDR-Info as well! It really helps all the LiteOn users that we have here.

Things have changed a bit since the post that I made. Instead of releasing a ton of different prepatched firmwares, I now have an easy-to-use graphical tool (called the OmniPatcher) that lets people customize their firmwares to their own liking. So here's what you do...

1/ Download the stock US0N from my site (yes, what you indicated above is correct)
2/ Download the OmniPatcher, also from my site (on a different page on my site)
3/ Run the OmniPatcher and load "812S.US0N.stock.exe"... make any customizations that you want to the firmware (if you want the "burn-adjust" that was mentioned in my previous post, tick the 3rd and 4th boxes in the middle section of the tool)... and then save your custom-patched firmware.
4/ Double-click on the file that you just saved to load the firmware into your drive. Be careful to select the correct drive when flashing. :)

Liteon has a new firmware released for the LiteOn SOHW-832S called DR8VS04. Will this firmware upgrade work for the SOHW-812S?

Here is the link.

Yes. Did you notice the new VS04 link on my website?

Is the DR8VS04 the exact same file as the VSO4 posted on your website? Or is it a modified version so that it will allow the 812 to be upgraded to the 832?

I guess my real question is, is the 812 and 832 the exact same drive? If so, why would LiteOn continue to post separate firmware upgrades?

Please excuse my ignorance here.

There are 2 VS04s on my website (it's a package with 2 files). One that is the same as the one on LiteOn's website. One that is for people whose drives were originally 812S drives.

The hardware is identical. But they don't want 812S owners flashing to 832S (bites into their profits... just like the 451S having identical hardware with the 851S, but they don't want one flashing to the other)

I don't see this firmware at the LiteOn website, does that mean its beta or something? Also does anyone have problems using DVD Decrypter to burn DVD images? Mine just sits at "Writing Lead In" forever. Nero works fine though.
Thanks

It's there. If you are referring to the website for their American branch, that is slow to update, but the main website was updated with VS04 last night.
