I have had a Phillips PCRW804 drive for a couple years now and never had any problems with it before. Now when I try to burn a music CD, it says that I don't have the proper media inserted and to insert a blank CD. I have tried several different CD's, but none of them work anymore. I don't understand what happened? Did a Windows XP update change something on my PC and now it is not compatible with my Phillips drive and/or firmware??? Do I need to update my drive's firmware? If so, where do I get it? I am running Easy Creator 5 on Windows XP Pro.

Thanks,
Mike Newman

That would have probably been the only updates that I have installed since it last worked. I plan on reviewing all XP updates when I go home tonight.

windows XP's security update 811493 has been known to cause MAJOR problems with burning CD-R/Ws on some systems. It appears not all systems are affected by it, though it has yet to be explained why. If you *have* installed this "update" I would suggest uninstalling it and seeing how things work

OK, I've ran the ASPI fix (said ASPI wasn't installed correctly), I've disabled DirectCD in msconfig, and updated my drive's firmware to ver2.5. As for disabling XP's built-in CD burner, I don't have a Recording tab under my drive's properties. I have a tab called "DirectCD 5.0 Options", but no way to Un-check any box that says Enable recording on this drive. I don't have it, maybe because I am running Roxio Easy CD Creator 5?

I checked the Microsoft updates that I installed since burning my last CD. They were:

814078: Security Update (Microsoft Jscript version 5.6, Windows 2000, Windows XP)

331953: Security Update (Windows XP)

Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows)

813489: April 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

330994: April 2003, Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1

I had previously installed 811493; Buffer Overrun in Windows Kernel Message Handling Could Lead to Elevated Privileges, but later uninstalled it because of a system slow-down. I had installed Windows Media Player 9 and RealOne Player prior to burning my last CD, so it can't be either one of those.

I am drawing a blank here. How can so many people be having a problem with this drive? Mine was working fine up until 3/16/03. Are everyone's problems related to Windows XP? Some of the post dates are very old like this has been going on for quite a while. Does anybody have anything further to add or try that might allow me to be able to burn CD's again with this drive???

Thanks!!!

alas, your drive may be going to the great CD factory in the sky, where all media is re-writable and there is no such thing as a coaster...

There is one more thing I haven't checked yet. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 316529 CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device.

Here is the web address: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;316529

I will check this out tonight. I am still confused as to what caused this??? Something had to get changed - it was working fine before...
