Hi
I hope someone can help with this nightmare issue I have!! Bought an LG GSA-2166D External Lightscribe DVD drive some months ago. At first it worked fine. At some point I updated the lightscribe software and firmware. Since then it is no longer recognised as a DVD player by my pc and won't burn or play DVDs. The lighscribe function still works. I also noticed that the pc also states that the drive is a GSA-4166B rather than 2166D?? I tried to install the firmware v1.02 for the GSA-2166D but it won't let me because it says the "model is mismatched."
As I understand it the 4166B is the internal version of the dvd burner so I even tried rolling back to version 1.0 of the firmware for this device but still no joy.
HELP!!!
Anyone got any idea how I can get my pc to recognise this correclt as a GSA-2166D for starters? I have uninstalled the driver and reconencted the device to a different USB socket but once the pc picks it up it keeps labelling it as the 4166B instead.

Many many thanks in advance!

You might want to try ala42's MediaCodeSpeedEdit, just for the ability to flash your drive with the correct firmware.

I think MP3Mogul had one of those at one time, perhaps he can add some suggestions for you...

Thanks for quick reply. I have downloaded the MediaCode software but i cant load the correct firmware to it, i think this is because I have the firmware in an .exe format and it wants it as a .bin.  Not sure how to get this as I did use WinRar to open but the firmware is still a .exe file?

Thanks Zebadee!! I now have the correct firmware installed and the pc recognises the DVD  drive as GSA-2166D. Sadly it still won't play DVD's or Burn them - keeps saying the following:
From Windows Explorer - Insert Disk
From Power DVD - Incorrect format disk

Anyone got any ideas, i'm really stuck.

Hi
Sadly sounds like laser problems.
Did you at any time have a disc in the drive while flashing. If so this could produce this problem.
Other than that then just the laser dying.
Either way it is looking like new drive required.

Go into your device manager and delete the IDE channel that the drive is on:

Now, make a new notepad txt document and enter this into it.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
then save the text document as NoFilter.reg
right click NoFilter.reg and click Merge.
then restart your machine.

Carllon,

I was wondering if you got your DVD Burner working.  I have been having similer problems and I was wondering if you got the help you needed and what exactly worked.

I'm trying to record home video on to DVD but the burner is not reconized by the software.  Also when I put a disc (any disc) in the external drive a window comes up and says I cannot access this drive.

Any advice?

What software are you using?  Does Windows see the drive?

While I don't have the GSA-2166, I do have two LG drives in USB enclosures (LG GSA-H22N in a INOi DW560U / USB and LG GSA-H62N in a Galaxy Metal Gear 5202AUAS /USB & eSATA).  No problems using mine in Windows XP Pro... Installed burning apps are:

ImgBurn 2.3.2.0
Golden Hawk CDRWIN 4.0F
VSO CopyToDVD 4.0.4
VSO ConvertXtoDVD 2.2.3
VSO PhotoDVD 2.4.0
CloneDVD 2.9.1.2
DVDFab Platinum 3.1.8.0

Also have AnyDVD... You may want to provide some details on your system as well.

Well my system is

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Verson 2002
Service Pack 2

Computer:
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
2.08 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM

The software I'm using is Pinnacle Studio Version 11

When I open My Computer and click on the driver it comes up:
E:\ is not accessible.
Incorrect function

I tried going to the LG site and load an updated driver but this doesn't help.
I just bought the software because the Super DVD software I bought over the internet was not reconizing the recordable drive.  When I went to the store I was asking which software I should get and the sales rep said that Pinnacle is the best, I guess its all a matter of opinion.  I did remove the other software because I know sometimes it interfers with other programs.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Hopefully this is enough info.  I can't think of anything else I can tell you.

Any help would be greatly appricated.

Did you try MP3Moguls suggestion in post #7?  The other thing to do is try that external drive on another PC.  Sounds like more of an OS issue than a specific application.  Is your AMD rig have an nForce chipset, VIA chipset?  Are you running the lastest chipset drivers?  There will not be a specific XP driver for the drive.

Well I tried to do MP3Moguls suggestion in post #7, however I really don't know how too.

I opened the IDE and it says Primary and Secondary but I'm not sure where the drive is located.

Thanks anyway for your help.

I wish I knew how to do what your saying.
