Hey all,

Just finished reading a huge thread on the all of the F/W options for the 6500A, but did not see my exact problem as the thread is now over a year old.

My issue is all of the new 16X DVD-R's out there. I cannot burn to them with my current F/W (2.02C).

I am sure the 8X DVD-R's I'm used to using (I prefer Memorex because of a sketchy DVD player at home likes them best) will start to dry up and I will have to buy the 16X.

NEC's website updates will not work because my drive was sold in a Dell notebook. They say I need to get the update from Dell, but no luck there.

Now I found the big thread with all of the issues and dangers of switching from 2.xx to 4.xx on this drive and I am stumped!!

Are any of you using 16X blanks with success with this drive, and if so, which F/W are you running?

The only program I am really using is CloneDVD, and it is giving me an error anytime it starts to burn on a 16X disc.

Thanks!!!

so probably there is a problem with your firmware and the used media, so either you update your firmware or simply, use other media

FYI

I have a Dell Latitude D810 with a NEC ND-6500a drive, which came with firmware 203c. I purchased a 50 pack spindle of Imation DVD-R 16x disks that the drive would reject as bad. I flashed the drive to firmware 203d from the Dell sight and now I can use the disks, no errors at all!

I Found it at this Dell Page

Hi there, I recently purchased 150 of 16x Maxell DVD-R which my Dell NEC6500 won't burn. Despite updating the file, it still doesn't work on Maxell 16x. Has anyone had any success on Maxell16x? Checking the Dell Forum seems to show that I am not the only one. (Although they didn't use Maxell). Please help, any samaritans out there!

Hi I have problem with recording verbatim dvd+r 16x (manufacturer ID MCC 004) with nero 7.0.1.4, It said something about power calibration error (nero log). I'm using firmware 2.40. When I tring to update fw to 4.24 (424_28.02.05.bin), binflash 1.30 says somthing about drive ID 84 and fw ID 85, and mixing master and slave firmware. Could somebody tell me what shall I do?

Hi Friends! Skrzat is your 6500 working or not? I mean does it being recognized from the system and is reading/writing? If so you shouldn't mix master with slave firmware, NEC drives need to be MASTER in order to work, some laptops have only 1 IDE channel so at this case, you need to use a reversed ATA firmware (to make it permanent working as SLAVE),however if your laptop has 2 IDE channels, then it should work OK with the normal firmware

Yes, it is working (reading no problems, writing with those verbatims -> I've check it with tdk dvd-rw 4x before I tried those verbatim dvd+r) . And it is on secondary master.
I dig a lite bit more and find out that 4.xx fw won't work and that there is 2.xx newer than mine -> 2.58 , after updating to this version everything works all right:-)
