Trump In Talks With Chip Makers Including TSMC to Bring Factories in the US: report

Enterprise & IT May 10,2020 0

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is in talks with semiconductor companies about building chip factories in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

The Trump administration has held talks with Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the newspaper reported, citing sources.

TSMC has been talking with the U.S. Commerce and Defense departments and with Apple, one of its largest customers, about building a chip factory in the United States, the report added.

U.S. officials are also looking at helping South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, which has a chip factory in Austin, Texas, to expand its contract-manufacturing operations in the United States, the Journal reported.

A spokesman for Intel said Sunday that the company is in discussions with the Defense Department about improving domestic technology sources. Spokesman William Moss said Santa Clara, California-based Intel is well-positioned to work with the government "to operate a U.S.-owned commercial foundry."

TSMC, Apple, and Samsung Electronics were not available for comment on Sunday.
