SK hynix Demonstrated Zoned Namespaces SSD Solution For Datacenters

PC components Mar 25,2019 0

SK hynix demonstrated at the Open Compute Project (OCP) global summit its proprietary solution with next-generation standards for enterprise solid state drive (SSD).

The memory chip maker showcased its zoned namespaces (ZNS) software for enterprise SSD, which increases the data processing speed by 30 percent and lasts four times longer than the existing SSD solution.

Compared to existing SSD solutions that store different types of data, such as image, video and sound, in a single space without separation, the ZNS SSD stores each type of data in separated zones that raise efficiency in data management. Each zone is written sequentially.

ZNS SSD is a techncal proposal in the NVMe working group. It standardizes zone interface as an approach to reduce device-side write amplification; reduce over-provisioning; and also reduce DRAM in SSDs. The result is improved latency and throughpu and less device-side data movements.

SK hynix said it will complete development of ZNS SSD within this year, with a goal of releasing commercial products for global data centers in the first half of 2020.

ZNS SSD solution

interface PCIe Gen3
protocol NVMe 1.2.1
Form factor M.2 22110
SSD capacity 2TB
NAND flash 72 layer 3D NAND 512Gb TLC
