Toshiba to Showcase PMR at DiskCon 2005

PC components Sep 13,2005 0

Toshiba will showcase its latest developments in perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) on the technology at DiskCon 2005, the premiere HDD industry event, Sept. 20-21, in Santa Clara, Calif. Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager of Toshiba SDD, will moderate the PMR presentation and present "Implications for a New Era of Hard Disk Drive Technology," which explores the advantages that perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) will bring to HDDs over other storage technologies. The presentation showcases Toshiba's first-to-market position with PMR, which has been in development by HDD manufacturers for more than 30 years. In addition, Hiroshi Okamura from Toshiba's Storage Design Center in Fremont, Calif., will present "Introduction of the Perpendicular Hard Disk Drive," detailing Toshiba's path to achieving the first mass produced PMR HDD.

Maccabe will moderate the "Perpendicular Recording - Innovation Achieved" session on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. This session also will outline the implications for the consumer electronics and computing industries in their quest to deliver a truly digital experience. Okamura's presentation in the Intermag/MMM/TMRC Conference - Related Highlights session will take place on Sept. 21 at 8 a.m.

Toshiba is one of the HDD manufacturers to commercialize PMR, providing unsurpassed recording density on its 1.8-inch HDD platform. The company's MK4007GAL HDD 1.8-inch HDD packs 40GB of storage space on a single platter. In addition, Toshiba plans to incorporate PMR on its 0.85-inch HDD in 2006, bringing capacity in the world's smallest HDD to 6GB-8GB.
