Intel Touts Record Performance Of New 24-core Xeon Processor E7-8894 v4

Intel Touts Record Performance Of New 24-core Xeon Processor E7-8894 v4

PC components Feb 9,2017 0

Intel today extended the performance capabilities of the Intel Xeon processor E7-8800 v4 product family with the addition of a high-performance SKU in the processor family's Advanced SKU stack -- the 24-core Xeon processor E7-8894 v4.

The Intel Xeon processor E7-8894 v4 combines high memory capacity and compute performance. The chip is targeted at scale-up workloads such as large databases, enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), online transaction processing (OLT) and in-memory analytics. The ability to scale-up allows more resources (more sockets and more memory) to be added to a single node image.

The 24-core chip is clocked at 2.40GHz (3.40GHz max. turbo frequency), it has 60MB cache and a 165W TDP. The recommended customer price, which typically represent 1,000-unit purchase quantities, is $8898.

To meet the increasing demands for 24x7x365 days availability and uptime for mission-critical systems, the processor has RAS capabilities on Intel Run Sure Technology.

The E7-8894 v4 supports 4 to 8 sockets (up to 32 sockets via node controller) with configurations supporting up to 24 processing cores and up to 24 terabytes (TB) of memory per socket.

Intel says that the new Xeon processor E7-8894 v4 has captured several record-breaking results based on key performance benchmarks, including SAP SD 2-Tier, SPECjbb2015, SPECcpu2006, LINPACK and SAP BW edition on SAP HANA.

Intel introduced the 14nm-based Intel Xeon processor E7-8800/4400 v4 family in June 2016. The new chips deliver sustained and sizable improvements in instructions-per-cycle (IPC). Architectural and process improvements since Westmere EX E7-8800 processor family deliver up to 3.69x performance gains compared to the previous generation.

Word on upcoming Cannonlake chips

In related news, Intel today said that the upcoming Cannonlake chips will deliver a performance improvement of more than 15 percent compared to its Kaby Lake chips.

The announcement was made today by Venkata Renduchintala, president of the Intel Client and Internet of Things businesses and Systems Architecture Group. Intel didn't provide exact numbers at the company's annual investor day Thursday, but the projection is based on the SysMark benchmark.

The first 10-nanometer Cannonlake chips are scheduled to ship in the second half of this year.

Intel will have to contend with AMD, which is coming on strong with Ryzen.
