HTC is About to Release a Combo UMPC/Handheld

HTC is About to Release a Combo UMPC/Handheld

Smartphones Jun 26,2007 0

This spring, HTC took the wraps off its first mobile device running Windows Vista. However, this company isn't going to stop there. According to a roadmap of upcoming devices recently released by HTC, it intends to make one that can run both Vista and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. It's a UMPC and a Handheld

To handle two different operating systems, this UMPC will have an unusual arrangement of memory. It will have 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM to run Windows Mobile, plus it will include 1 GB of RAM and a 30 GB or 40 GB hard drive for Vista.

This device -- code-named Shangri-La but also called the X9500 -- will apparently have a single 800 MHz processor from Intel's Dothan line.

It's a UMPC and a Laptop

This this combination handheld and UMPC will have a tablet design, but it will include a sliding QWERTY keyboard hidden behind its 7-inch, 800-by-480-pixel touchscreen. When the screen is slid aside to expose the keyboard, it will flip up at an angle.

The Shangri-La will function as a GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE. It will also support 3G cellular-wireless networking, and have a VGA camera for video conferencing.

For short-range wireless networking it will include Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0.

The X9500 will be able to function as a USB 2.0 host, and be hooked up to an external monitor.

A miniSD slot, GPS receiver, and biometric fingerprint scanner will round out this UMPC's features.

All of this will be powered by a 2800 mAh battery.

Pricing and Availability

Although HTC released a data sheet on the Shangri-La, it has not said when it plans to put this device on the market.

Also unknown is what this UMPC will cost, but the price is likely to be high.
