Apple's iPhone X is obviously not a record-breaking device in terms of sales, and the company is reportedly planning to reduce its production.

According to Nikkei, Apple will halve its production target for the iPhone X in the three-month period from January to around 20 million units, in light of slower-than-expected sales in the year-end holiday shopping season in key markets such as Europe, the U.S. and China.

The $999 iPhone X, Apple's first smartphone equipped with an organic light-emitting diode display, has failed to catch on globally. The lackluster sales could result in a delay to the company's plans to introduce OLED screens in other models.

Cupertino was expected to launch a second model this year that would be positioned as a Plus-sized version of the 2017 iPhone. But now Apple is believed to have started considering an increase to proportion of liquid crystal display iPhone models by reducing production of the OLED screen models scheduled for release this year.

Apple Japan replied to Nikkei's request for comment by stating that it would confirm the details with headquarters.

Apple's fiscal second quarter ending in March is particularly important this time around because the company needs iPhone sales to remain strong in order to hit Wall Street's current prediction of overall revenue growing 19% this fiscal year compared with 6% last year.

Meanwhile, Apple's rival Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are expected to have OLEDSs and become the biggest premium smartphone draw at the world's largest mobile trade show at the end of next month.

The launch date of the latest Galaxy phones has been conformed to be Feb. 25 -- one day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off in Barcelona, Spain.

Although Samsung has refused to confirm this, countless Galaxy S9 leaks have shown that its camera can be moved from a very fast aperture of f/1.5 to a slightly slower f/2.4, depending on conditions.

Along with the improved camera, the new Samsung phone is expected to pack Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor and come with 4GB of RAM for the S9 and 6GB of RAM for the larger S9 Plus. In addition, it is said to offer various option for internal storage: 64GB and 128GB for the standard model and one more option of 256GB for the variant.

The S9 is expected to come with a 5.8-inch display, with the S9 Plus featuring a 6.2-inch screen.

LG Electronics plans to showcase an upgraded V30 instead of introducing a new G7 at the MWC. The advanced version of the V30 is expected to come with improved artificial intelligence features.

Huawei has also postponed launching the P11 at the MWC until April, when it is expected to hold its own event in Europe. Instead, Huawei will reportedly focus on tablets and 2-in-1 notebooks at the Barcelona's tech show.
