Apple Also Looks At Globalfoundries To Ensure Chip Capacity Flow

Apple Also Looks At Globalfoundries To Ensure Chip Capacity Flow

PC components Jul 13,2013 0

Reports have been circulating online this week related to talks between Apple and chip maker Globalfoundries, possibly as part of Apple's moves to guarantee access to future chip making plants. The speculation about a possible Apple - Globalfoundries deal appeared at SemiAccurate.com web site on Friday. The report said Apple has "bought into" a fab at Globalfoundries, meaning that Apple would own capacity at a fab, gaining control over both design and chip manufacturing.

A second resport appeared at Cnet.com, claiming that Apple and Globalfoundries are in talks but no deal has been reached yet.

Currently, Apple processors are made by its mobile "rival" Samsung Electronics. But according to reports, this deal will expand in 2014. A possible deal with Globalfoundries would most probably be a backup plan for chip making that would offset the risk, as the company is expected to contract Globalfoundries' "rival" TSMC for its upcoming chips.

Globalfoundries declined to comment.
