The S500i is not up to Sony Ericsson's usual high standards for a mobile. It does well in the looks department, but the features aren't much to write home about.

The K810i is a comfortable mobile phone to use. A clich?, we know, but it really is very 'user-friendly'. And it is ideal for those who want a competent cameraphone.

The Sony Ericsson W610i is a pretty average Walkman phone. The presence of an FM radio is a treat, but the screen and camera are both a little below par, and the small buttons might be too fiddly for some.

The P990i (Best Current Price: £326) is a significant product for Sony Ericsson. It's a sophisticated Tri-band/3G device that gets you to the point where you can really start to minimise on the number of devices and paperwork you carry around. In addition, the push e-mail capability especially helps to bring business mobility in a safe, secure and fast environment. Secure, relatively simple and fast access to e-mail and the Internet are critical requirements for true office mobility, so it's a shame the P990i doesn't excel. The ability to access e-mail and calendar while out of the office is critical for mobile executives as they no longer need to return to the office to perform this task, but the P990i's convoluted Symbian 9.1-based menu system and tiny QWERTY keyboard are nigh on impossible to fathom - Windows Mobile 6.0 and BlackBerry really do shine by comparison.

A major addition to Sony Ericsson's family of Walkman phones, the W950i is a slim (106x54x15mm, 112g), ultra-stylish, UMTS-enabled (3G) device with an impressive 4GB of onboard storage - perfect for music buffs! It also comes complete with a 2.6-inch colour touchscreen, allowing for not-so-simple navigation through music genres, playlists, individual songs or music albums. A little more than a music phone, the W950i also offers relatively fast e-mail and Web browsing and comes with a suite of entertainment applications, making it one of the most highly specified phones in the Sony Ericsson portfolio.

O2 has quietly but doggedly stuck with i-mode since launch, and has steadily added new handsets into its i-mode range. Sony Ericsson's K610im is the latest to receive the i-mode treatment. It is a 3G handset with tri-band GSM, so it is a pretty capable communicator and is available from several other operators in a non i-mode variant as the K610i.
