Home and business customers alike continue to look for both high-performance and high-quality output from today's business laser printer products. At the same time they expect a printer that continues to deliver real print budget benefits, today and tomorrow. Dell's Laser Printer 1720 and Laser Printer 1720dn laser printers continue the high performance/low price standards set by their predecessor products, the Dell Laser Printer 1710 series, offering improved features and performance while continuing to drive down print costs. If you're in the market for a solid monochrome workhorse for networked business use, you can't go much wrong with the Laser Printer 1720dn. And if you don't need duplex or Ethernet connectivity, the Laser Printer 1720 is even better value for money.

The new Core 2 Duo based Dell Inspiron 6400 is a faithful workhorse that balances performance and battery life. Its other features though, are more down to earth and even a little uninspiring, including a chassis design that has been around for an eternity. What can the new Dell do for you?

If you like the look of Dell's PC displays you will probably be very happy with the color and design of their TVs as well. The Dell W3207C 32" LCD HDTV looks fantastic in the familiar black and silver Dell color scheme. The 32" panel has a surround that is about 2" thick and the speakers are located to the left and right of the screen. The speakers have 15W per channel for 30W total and use a two way integrated design with bass reflex design.

For the most part Dell has used AMD chips in its lower range affordable solutions and this is still the case with the Latitude 131L. Targeted at the ever lucrative business market, the 131L is a no frills notebook that's perfect for all those tedious office applications we all love to hate but simply can't do without.

Dell's build quality is particularly good as the SC440 is enclosed in a solid steel shell which is the same as that employed by the higher-end PowerEdge SC1430. There's room at the front for a pair of 5.25in devices and the price includes an IDE DVD-ROM drive. The system doesn't have any PS/2 ports but does come as standard with the appropriate keyboard and mouse. To access the interior a large lever at the back is pushed forward which pops the side panel out for easy removal. The lever itself can be padlocked shut to protect against wandering fingers.

Building on the company's projector line, Dell?s compact 1800MP (£519 ex. VAT) delivers relatively high quality image and text reproduction. The silver-and-black unit is therefore ideal for businesses, educators and even consumers looking for a highly portable XGA projector for general use. The only real downside is that the projector is a little noisy at 36dBA (normal operation)/31dBA (eco-mode).

The svelte BTX-based XPS 210 (from £599, no monitor) delivers the power of Intel Core 2 Duo processor performance (minus the Extreme X6800) in an eye-catching industrial design about the width of a business card, ideal for student rooms, space-constrained offices or entertainment centres. Similar to all of Dell's desktop machines, the XPS 210 comes with a raft of options that help make it easier for you to personalise the Windows-based PC for specific needs ranging from entertainment to office applications.

I have been looking for a new laptop for a while. My previous laptop the Dell 700m was great and I had no problems with it at all. I wanted an upgrade, something that was small like the 700m, but also powerful and able to play games. After looking around I found a few laptops I was interested in, but I cut the list down to 2 laptops, the Dell XPS M1210 and the ASUS A8J. The deciding factor was that I was actually able to go look at the Dell and check it out. Also my previous Dell had no problems so I opted for the Dell.

Another day, another traditional PC manufacturer ready to try its hand at this LCD TV malarkey. We've already seen such PC names as ViewSonic, Relisys and Acer have a crack at carrying their PC monitor know-how over into the AV world (with decidedly mixed results, it must be said), and now no less a name than Dell has joined the throng.

Over the last year we've seen a steady trend of manufacturers moving away from the already popular and well established 19" sector to concentrate on the emerging 20" market. This has been matched by a growing demand by the consumer for a larger format and resolution, with an increased interest in the widescreen format in particular. Widescreen popularity is on the increase due to modern games, High Definition TV, and gaming devices all offering support for this aspect ratio. People are now looking for multi-purpose displays capable of meeting their combined multimedia needs ranging from normal desktop PC use to the connection of Blu-Ray DVD and XBox 360 devices.

As expected from Dell, the company has pushed the performance and scalability envelope for industry-standard professional workstations. The Precision 390 was designed as the ideal complement to the company?s desktop line as it balances advanced performance and scalability with exceptional value, all while providing relatively high-end application performance. Not surprisingly, the system blew the doors off every machine we?ve ever tested on almost every benchmark, especially processor-intensive programs consisting of animations, video, and multi-track audio.

The path to the Dell XPS PC that?s on the desk in front of me has been long. Riyad first sighted it out at E3 back in May and came back to the office raving about the new case that Dell had chosen for its latest XPS machine. Dell did start shipping the system in July in the US, powered by an Intel Pentium D based Extreme Edition CPU. Now Core 2 Duo is here and the XPS 700 we have been sent is powered by an E6700 Core 2 Duo running at 2.66Ghz.

Dell?s UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch is a more than capable widescreen LCD Monitor for running as a main desktop screen. It?s also a great choice for watching DVDs in natural format and running multiple applications simultaneously, as well as for hooking up a videogames console. The 2407WFP also provides an excellent option for video editing and 3D imaging as both source and destination video can be viewed in a single window, and with four USB 2.0 ports (located on the side), the monitor provides convenient access to plug in devices such as keyboards, digital cameras, secondary hard disk drives and printers. Image quality is also top notch for the money, so you can?t really go wrong at this price point.

After waiting a lifetime-and-a-half for Dell?s latest desktop rig to arrive (apparently there were cooling problems with the motherboards), gamers in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) can now run the most intensive games and 3D applications with the availability of the Intel Core 2 Duo (up to 2.66GHz E6700) and Extreme (2.93GHz X6800) processors on Dell?s XPS 700 (from £1199) desktop PC.

Dell has done what many thought would be beyond it - created a decent gaming system that hardcore enthusiasts would be happy to have on their desk. The engineers have nailed the industrial design and the core internal design, but the guys haven't quite managed to get the components and the pricing right. But for all our ragging on the component specifications, Dell has really got the core of this system spot on, and for that it earns our Recommended award. However, we hope Dell takes our comments on board and sorts future machines out with the kind of components that will really make the Core 2 Duo processor shine - and at the right price.
