First of all I am a newbie DeLuxe. Certainly no tech. I had an NEC 8X burner in an older computer that worked fine. Just slow. I had my tech build me a super computer with an AMD 64 bit chip, 1 gig RAM, the whole nine yards, and a top shelf video card. I wanted to play Doom 3 without hesitation. Also I wanted to be able to burn DVDs faster. The tech installed a LiteOn DVDRW 1633S which was burning full length movies to my Verbatim +R 8X blanks at a blazing speed of 18-20 minutes total read and write. I ran out of +R and bought Verbatim -R since some of my burns would not work on some players. I was hopeful that -R would do better. After about a week, it started slowing to 30 minutes. Then a day later to an hour. Then quickly down to one hour just to read, then it failed to write. I had been on the net, but very little and downloaded nothing. Added no hardware and only loaded the Doom3 game. I disabled the antivirus software, but no success.
I took the thing back to my tech who replaced the burner with another new one, without success. He did all the tweaking and changing, still nothing. I went back to try burning on my old burner/computer and now it's gone belly up too! A new 1633S in my old computer would not work either! I tried installing another new 1633S in my office computer and had no luck there! RATS! The tech says that he has never had a 1633S go bad much less two or three in a row. I even downloaded the new firmware from LiteOn (whatever firmware is) No Luck!
I have ICopyDVDs2, iClickDVDCopy, DVD X Copy Platinum, and none of these work in any of my machines. I have even tried to slow the speed down on the burner, but still get the same "Write failed" error and "WriteSector failed" "Illegal request, Invalid Address for write"
Anyone have any ideas. You all seem so bright and I am so dumb in this area. I have checked the IDE and the DMA settings and all seem to be correct. (I don't have a clue as to what they are or do, that is just some of the limited info I gleaned from the crappy LiteOn website) I believe the probs burning with my new computer started at the same time that I activated my Windows XP. After 23 days I only had seven left. I can't see how the activation could have caused a problem!?!

Help! I have backed up several of my originals at light speed, but now find myself dead in the water on three different computers! Thanks!!!

What i can purpose, is to slow down the recording speed, update firmware, and if possible, get another burner, like benq dw1620 or NEC 3520a or Pio 109

I have slowed the speed to max at 8X and also have updated the firmware. If the LiteOn worked so well to begin with and nothing of significance has changed, what could have happened to force the LiteeOn out of use? I haven't found anyone else having problems with the 1633S?

I think most LiteON users 1213s/1613s/1633s are not very happy with their recorders due to high in-stability of the burner with the variety of media, LiteON drives became very known for their low price, their overclocking abilities and of course KProbe, latetly i see that most people tend to go away from LiteON and switch to BenQ/NEC/Pioneer, even some of their biggest supporters are quite silenced...

I don't intend to sound dumb, but what the heck! What is Kprobe?

I have the 1633S with BS42 firmware, and the writing quality isn't even 1/10th of the quality of the Plextor.

Although it's off for me to admit this, the new PX-716a looks like it might actually be a good drive now that the new 1.04 firmware makes it work properly! Still, I'd recommend a BenQ DW1620 over the PX anyways.

However, it sounds like the problem is not burner related... More likely software related I would think. Maybe try a fresh install of windows, and TURN OFF all WinXP burning software.

My tech believes it may be the mother board. We have tried everything including reformatting the drive and reinstalling software from scratch. Still no luck Could it be the motherboard?

Hardware:

Athlon 64 bit
3000+

MSI K8T Neo motherboard

Kingston PC3200 1gig memory

LiteOn DVDRW 1633s

Thanks!!!!

I think my tech has ordered another motherboard of a different brand. We'll see if that works. Hopefully it will be here tomorrow or Wednesday. Since my tech is a good friend, I jump in front of everyone else. He is as anxious as I am to learn what the problem is. It's very frustrating to burn 50 DVDs at a rate of 4 an hour to not being able to burn anything at all without having changed anything!!! I understand that without hands on, a definitive answer is very difficult, but I certainly appreciate your help!
