I have a Liteon 163D that I was trying to update the firmware on and it sat there forever. More than an hour and did not progress, so I had to shut down the computer. Which I know better, but nothing was happening.

My boot HD is the master and my 163D is the slave. When I tried to restart, my MB wouldn't recognize my HD or my 163D in the primary IDE channel....so it would not start.

I removed my IDE cable and got a new one, just for fun and I have since only hooked up my HD.

Is that DVD drive hosed? Is there anything I can do to salvage it?

you can flash that drive again, it's not toast. You may have to use a DOS flasher.

Will a dos flasher work even if my drive is not recognized by my Motherboard?

When it was plugged in as a slave to my HD my MB said
"Searching Primary IDE Channel - Master - Nothing Found
Searching Primary IDE Channel - Slave - Nothing Found"

I then uplugged the DVD Drive then if found my HD again.

Will a DOS Flasher work? Should I have any other drives plugged in?

Thanks for the info. What a day of no-fun! I finally got it done. From the site above I got mktflash and made a boot floopy and everything worked perfectly. Then I plugged all my other drives back in and it would not find my HD....so windows would not load. I unplugged, replugged, new IDE cable, old cable, primary, secondary......try-fail, try-fail, finally I noticed one wire from one of my 4 pin power connectors had popped out. Whew. All is good.

Now, I am testing to see if my 163D backsup my DVDs faster than my 3500. 4 tests so far this morning.

With SL discs it beats my 3500 hands down. Only about 15min using Recode with no advanced analysis.

With DL Discs I'm not certain yet...It appears to do the advanced analysis much faster, but the compiling DVD seems slower.
