Excuse the dumb question but I'm a complete noob. I'm looking at the NEC ND-3500A for two purposes:

1) To transfer home videos after editing to DVD
2) To make backups for use at a vacation house and on a portable player.

It would seem I need authoring software for purpose 1 and copying software for purpose 2?

DVD Copy software is needed for recording the movie ( or data) on a DVD disc.

The authoring gives you the opportunity to make a movie of your own, from your camcorder for example. You have several videos and you want to montage them.

The editing software allows you to make some changes. For example remove subtitles, or choose some of the provided, or remove menus in a movie.

If your home videos (from your V8, D8, DV....) have already be converted to MPEG2, then you will need some authoring software (TMPGEnc DVD Author for example) to convert them into DVD video format

Then you will need a burning software which support to burn DVD-Video to burn it to your DVD-/+R media.

Editing software, well, two phases.
I think you should be familiar with video editing software, which you can edit your video to remove some section, add some text, add some special effect (such as fading out or fading in), etc.

Another editing which Iggy has mentioned is part of authoring process, which allow you to edit the menu, subtitle.....

Some recommendation for you:
Video Editing / Converting: Ulead Video Studio
DVD Authoring S/W: TMPGEnc DVD Author, Ulead DVD WorkShop Express
DVD Video Burning S/W: Nero Burning ROM
