I don't agree. I'm really happy with my 4160. It does everything I expect, burns -R in 8 minutes which then play in all my DVD players. DVD-RAM is a bonus that other drives don't provide. Thus far, I have absolutely no need for bitsetting but I can't understand why LG would support that for the 4120 and 4163 and not the 4160. I suppose if I had trouble playing disks I would be pissed off. But, as I said, I'm quite satisfied.

I sent two e-mails to "LG" asking if bit setting would be supported, never received a reply.
I finally rang "LG" customer service in Australia on December 9th 2004, the customer service representative advised, bit setting would NOT be supported.

Hi first time ive posted so hope it works ok!

Does anyone know what the chances would be of disks being produced in the LG 4160 playing on my Panasonic DMR-E50 dvd recorder? and disks recorded in the Panasonic playing in the LG?

The Panasonic recorder plays and records to DVD-R and DVD-RAM only and according to Panasonic is not capable of playing DVD-RWs, DVD+R or DVD-ROM so not really worried about book type setting as it will not support DVD-ROM anyway. OR will it?

also is there any chance of there being a DVD+RW DL and DVD-R DL in the future?

Sorry if these questions seem abit strange but im am currently looking for my first DVD-RW and because of the LG being able to read/write DVD-RAM and DVD-R hopfuly this drive will be most campatiable with my DMR E-50

After Reading through the forum i have heard alot about setting the book type too DVD-ROM.
But is it possible to set the Book type too DVD-R? so that DVD+R and DVD+R DL can be compatiable with DVD-R only players?

If so what DVD-RWs can do this?

Thanks

Hi,
I recently bought GSA-4160B and first burn I've done failed!

Before burning anything I upgraded bios to 302. Then I tried to burn (almost) full dvd on TDK 1-4x DVD-R. Nero burned it, but data verification failed, and I coudn't read last four of 26 (equal size) files on dvd. Everytime I try to copy it back to hdd a CRC error box pop up. I tried it second time with TDK again and had same problem, this time with last seven files. After that I burned other stuff on TDKs, this time with less then 60% of 4,7GB capacity of media. There wasn't any problems any more.
Why 4160 can't burn 4x TDK-Rs ? Doesn't TDK make good disks? ...
The only good thing in that was that I didn't have to keep pink DVD in my collection (there were 5 TDK disks in 5 different colors). Who the hell thought of making PINK DVD ??!
Anyway, be warned, don't buy these media for 4160!
Or is it just my burner?

Later on I got myself Verbatim-R 4x and EMTEC+R 4x and burned almost 4.7 "GB" to both, without any problems.

This is my first DVD burner. I didn't thought that writing and reading DVDs can be so silent O_O

LG drives are rather picky about medias. Maybe your TDK medias are comming from a bad batch. Try to find the media code with Nero Info Tool.

I own a 4120B, and the best results come from Verbatim and Taiyo Tuden.
While the drive is good with -R, it's better with +R. Maxell are pretty decent too.
Of course 4120B have bisetting, something LG refuse to implement on 4160B.
Shame on LG for this.

But if you keep having problem with your 4160B, don't waste your time and return it where you bought it. With a little bit of luck they'll send you a 4163B.

No media code available. Or do you mean Manufacturer ID, which is TTG01 ?

Hopefully they will someday...

It's not that easy. I think they won't accept it back in shop where I bought it, and anyway, here in Poland we don't have 4163B yet.
It's not that I don't like/want 4160B. I'm very happy about what it can do. The only bad think about it are bitsetting and those TDK DVDs. But that may be fixed some day (can certain media handling be fixed by bios update?).

According to the 4160 user manual the recommended DVD media for the drive are:
DVD-R: Maxell, Taiyo Yuden and JVC;
DVD-RW: JVC, Mitsubishi Chemical and TDK;
DVD+R: Taiyo Yuden, JVC and Ricoh;
DVD+RW: TDK and FujiFilm.

But, with the update to the 0302 firmware some other media are also supported. According to the link above with the 0302 Firmware, 4160 works fine with LiteON, Benq, Sony, Philips and Plextor media also.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/lite/t-114439.html

I personally tested the HP DVD+R media and Powerdisc DVD+RW too, and they seems to work fine with 4160 and on the other drives where I readed them. I'll try the LG DVD-R media too, soon.
I heard that SMAC media works fine with this drive, but didn't tried yet.
If a new firmware (hopefully with bitsetting) is released, maybe your TDK media work properly then.

About the pink media... Hold them till somebody ask you to copy something for them and stuff.

My Panasonic F87 plays the DVD-r and DVDRAM disks I've burned with the LG. I'd expect the LG to play anything you burn.

If DVD-RW are as awful as CD-RW after a couple rewrites, you're better off using DVDRAM. I've rewritten mine many times and they play great in the Panasonic.
