I want to buy a DVD writer, after reading this LG-4160B review, I can't choose TDK 1616N or LG 4160B..... please help me!

I want to get a drive with:
1. reliable
2. excellent CD/DVD writing quality (mainly on 8x for +/-R and 4x +/-RW)
3. Big media support ( can be fixed by firmware )
4. support DVD-ROM booktype for DVD+R/+RW/+R DL formats ( can be fixed by firmware )

and I consider LG have 5x DVD-RAM, and TDK have 4xDVD+R DL!

If I use LiteOn 165H as a reader, booktype is important to me?

get the LG model m8 and not the NEC/tdk devil thing. NEC based drives are totally unreliable. 2 out of 10 are damaged

I also disagree on that. My short experience, including my friend's, tell me the opposite.

Hi, i'm new to the forum but not a newbie.

By the way, thumb-up to minos for the great review!

But i think he made a small mistake.
In the review, minos claim that the GSA-4160B does not support Mt. Rainier.

On the LG site, LG claim it does support Mt. Rainier. So, who's right?

Really sad that it's not CAV/P-CAV

But a truly sweet 16x on MCC 004
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=11079&PageId=13
- The ONLY media it did 16x on

The 4x on MCC 002 was fantastic as well

I guess we know what media THEY do most testing with!

Yes the media supported list for 16X is too poor, and I was expecting that the writing startegy would be CAV. Anyway the results speak for an excellent drive no matter what the strategy is.

From the LG 4120B model, the results with verbatim media were excellent, which leads me to believe they are strongly support Verbatim...This has its advantages and disadvantages, cause using Verbatim media you will get best results but using other media, results maybe not so good

Yes the LG GSA-4160B has rather strict supported media list for 8X/12X/16X but most of its burns are very good, it would be great if there were un-official firmware enabling more features...
