Hi everyone,

This is my very first post in this forum.

To my question. For Christmas gift I recieved a bunch of CDs and unfortunatly all of them were protected with either CDS200 or Key2Audio, which really sucks since I use my HTPC as my major music listening device.

Is there any way to get around this? I´ve heard of something called the Filt Pen tric or Tape Trick, but haven´f found any guides of how to apply these onto my CDs, so I hoped anyone out there could help me out with this, either directly in the forum or via a link.

Secondly, if the pen tric is to risky, in terms of vasting the CDs, is there any CD-R drive to reckommend that could fix this? Read some reviews of drives and found out that Plextor, CyberDriv and Yamaha seems to be good choices. Any comments on that?

Well I would suggest the Yamaha F1 as it will copy both the CDS200 and Key2Audio Protected Disks quite easily. Use the Black Pen trick at your own risk as I do know some people who have made their originals unreadable !!!

I tried with a bunch of CD-R, DVD and ordinary CD-ROM drives but without any success. Well, took out a filter pen (found a guide) and painted that annoying outer line of the CD. Put it into my Pioneer 106s drive and voila, it could read every single track without any problems.

Well, after had washed the CD I could still recognize that the filter pen had left traces.

PS: Found that I could purchase the Yamaha F1 for around 100$ here in Sweden (that includes 25% tax), is that a bargain?

Remember people, we are here to help you make BACKUPS of your CDs and Software. Not to make copies of stuff you do not own. We do not want to get the forum or the people involved in trouble with the law so we keep this all legal. Thanks.......

I have already used it to backup almost all my protected CDs: it couldn't work better, really.

Use very thin lines and you won't recognize anything on the CD's surface.

Ciao Laffin, the F1 is quite good and probably one of the best burners I know, but you must use it ALSO to read the protected CD and you can't make "on the fly" copies. Furthermore, it does NOT read ALL protected CDs, and I still have to understand why...

Again, I can testimony that the Pen-Trick worked fine with ALL the CDs I backed up 'til now.

No probs, the CDs actually belonged to my beloved sister, and it´s her computer I only use it :).

The external CRW-F1DX (USB) I tested didn't read Avril Lavigne, Natalie Imbruglia & Celine Dion's last albums.
I tested it using a friend's laptop running Win Xp Pro w/o SP1 and its original firmware ( 1.0a ? ).
Don't know if it reads those albums ( all Key2 prot. ) with a newer firmware or upgrading Win Xp Pro with the Service Pack 1, though.
If you are that sure that it reads "ALL current AudioCD protected titles without any problems" I can only think that we used a different configuration and I surely believe you.
As I find the time ( and my friend..) I will do further tests that I'm more than glad to report here and share with you all.
By the way, I think the Yamaha CRW-F1 is one of the best burners ever and yes, Steiner83 I strongly suggest it.
I'm an old Plextor's "aficionado" but I must ( gladly ) admid that the F1 is simply amazing.

I already had that problem: now & then that link seems impossible to reach. I can only suggest to try to re-link, hopeing in better results.
That server is often down but I tested the link previewing my previous message...weird thing indeed. Sorry.

You have to update F1 firmware to bypass audio protections.

I could back up the CD's mentioned above with the CRW F-1 without changing the "out of the box" firmware, however I have upgraded it. The CRW-F1 will go through CDS200 or Key2Audio protections like melted butter on toast.

Must I suppose that Internal & External F1's did act differently ?

The CRW-F1 can do CDS200 without any issues! Trying the latest firmware maybe solve some issues. Alway try to rip the disc with the proper software!
