I'm going to try it on my Compaq Presario laptop
I'll check back later.......

It's not working I think it's because the IBM uses other version nr's then Compaq

1) Goto "Device Manager" and select and uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel.
2) Restart the system and let the os to auto-detect the hardware
3) If detected, you should have both options set to "PIO mode".
4) Set to "DMA if available" for both options.
5) Restart the system again

I already did this and it didn't help.

I have a similar problem on my Presario 908EA with this CDRW/DVD. Basically random, intermittent failures to write, usually after a certain number of tracks on audio CDs. I'm mainly using Audio Cleaning Lab 3.0 at the moment, could it be anything to do with this?

Did anyone find a Compaq version of the firmware update available on the Dell and IBM websites?

Any ideas greatfully received. Thanks

I'm fixing my friend's laptop "presario 900" with GCC-4240N cd/dvd and the same problem you are having, I check the norton antivirus def files and and it was old, I'm currently updating and scanning the system and found so far about 50 viruses mostly Klez virus..this could be your problem..

I got a new R40 IBM laptop at work, and it has HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N drive.
* It runs DVDs, but can not open audio CDs, CD-Rs which I have burnt, and other standard software CDs (like CD for USB driver for my SONY cybershot digital camera).
* Unfortunately I do not have a floppy drive and so can not do the step listed at :
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-41020.html?up=unknownuser

Will appreciate your help on how to get this thing working.

thanks.

Thanks for your reply. On this page I found the firmware update for
HLDS (LG) GCC-4240N (24X/8X/8X/24X).

My drive is HL-D**T**-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N

Question:
1) Can I use the same firmware ?
2) Has anyone else used it. It is my office laptop and I do not wish to destroy the drive.

Appreciate your help.

thanks.

Oh - thats not easy to answer. I would ask this question in the forum.rcp1.org, they are very familiar with all that stuff about firmware. You can also try to get some info with the search tool in this forum.

Make it 3![:(!]

Yesterday it was working normaly, but now i can't read/write cds! It only reads DVDs...

I hope this is a software problem and not a hardware one, or this laptop has to go straight to tech support...

Edit: my laptop is a HP Pavilion zx5051EA PhotoSmart, and the drive is a HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N ...

I get this error whet I run the firmware:
C:\@work\aa>FLASHUP.EXE 42L1122b.dld

Drive Firmware Update Utility Rev. 3.2
(C) 2001 Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc.

Download file information:
File Name :42L1122b.dld
Vendor ID :HL-DT-ST
Product ID :RW/DVD GCC-4240N
Firmware Revision :E112

No CD/DVD dirve model HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N. (2)

That's trange because I do have such a cd/dvd drive.
I ran this utillity from my hard drive aftre I copied from floppy. The reason is I don't have a floppy and a CD rom at the same time, they use the same module location on my DELL Lattitude c640 laptop.
But I don't think this is the problem. The system information recognize my cd rom as ID IDE\CDROM HL-DT-ST_RW/DVD_GCC-4240N_______________D110____\5&2040CED5&0&0.0.0

Any ideeas?

Thank you.
