I just purchased the 812s w/firmware USOF.
Is there any real benefit in updating to the latest firmware USOJ?
Will it increase the drive's performance. Example: burning 4x media at 8x.
I know the the recent firmware updates for the 811s enabled it to burn certain 4x media at 8x.

Anybody have any experience with this new update?

Yes, the latest firmware adds many new media among with the BookType Setting

I have a 812S, and I didn't necessarily see any changes to burn speeds, but the book type setting is a bonus in the firmware!

I am just hoping they don't forget about the firmwares for this drive when they debut the Dual Layer drive. Also, as far as I can tell, the dual layer drive, and this drive are identical down to EACH INDIVIDUAL CHIP. Seems a firmware will enable this drive to be a dual layer recorder, however don't expect LiteOn to release it... they will want you to purchase the dual layer writer.

I just updated the firmware. I need the booktype setting options for my dvd burning.
Let's hope they offer a dual-layer update.

Emperor..... you are correct, I already have it, flashed it, and it's working fine...... I just wanted to use it for a bit to see how it holds up.... This is a very "inexpensive" drive to "me" and I don't care if it burns up, but I promise to put it to the test, over and over and see how it holds up. As stated above, this drive is identical, with a new label, and if LiteOn can release the new drive and support it, then the 812s with a conversion firmware should hold up just as well! I'll post back when I have definitive results!
