Glad to hear your problems have been solved!

Yes, unfortunately it does take a while to detect hardware failures, since so many other factors come into play. Maybe Plextor Premium will have better diagnostic utilities.

Before switching the modem, investigate the router option. Here cheap but quite powerful routers start at about $50, with a 2 year warranty.
