I bought the Fuji Film 24x cd-r's (made in Japan) from Circuit City because people say they are the best for use with any cd-rw drive. But when I pop these in my Plextor (1.03 f/w) the burning time takes up to 4m34s for a 650MB cd. My other TDK cd-r's can burn a whole CD on the 241040TA in under 3m10s.

Is this what most of your experience has been with the Fuji Film CD-r's on the Plextor 24/10/40A?

I use 74 mins. FujiFilm CD-R's (rated at 16x) and they do 24x without any problem.

Who (according to the ATIP code) actually makes these Fuji CD's? Maybe they come from different sources.

If you think TDK 24x CDR's are fast, you should try MITSUI 24x media! This media will burn a 650mb in under two minutes!!! Now that fast!

Yes Mitsui is fast with the plex only a little to fast beacuse at 24x the writing quality will be bad. So better stay safe at 16x always with your plex. Since most times the quality at higher speeds then 24x isn't so good.

rjw, you know I burned a music CD the other day at 24x with my Plextor 24x and one of the tracks came out googlely. I was wondering what the problem was. So, the 24x speed is not that good on the fly, huh? So, what's the use of Plextor Boasting the 24x then, if the drive won't write accurately at that speed?

The 2410 does write audio accurately at 24x. But you should remember that 2 factors influence that, the quality of the media, and the reader you will use to play the copy.

Also, most audiophile freaks avoid the use of Z-CLV. I have to admit I never encountered any audible glitches, but if that bothers you, then recording at 16x or 12x is an easy option.

Keep in mind that not all 24x certified media is the same, and that Plextor has tuned up the firmware to work better with certain brands.

Beowulf, you have a point too. But the whole story about that burn I made is that I used a TDK "All Speed" audio media disc and set the Plextor burn speed at 24x. And only one of those songs wasn't played back right on my CD drive. Also, the songs were downloaded with the WinMx software and Servers. Soooooooo, what do you think!

I agree with you Beowulf regarding the quality of the 24X media. But the Fuji Film 24x??? It is even on the list of recommended 24X media on plextor's site! http://www.plextor.be/English/technical/cdrmedia.html

If they recommend it as a 24X media shouldnt my burner be able to burn CD's at 24X instead of 16X???

I mean for god's sake! Most people recommended the made in Japan Fuji Film media as the best! That's way I bought those thinking I would be able to burn at 24X.

I have the 24x fujifilm and it burns in 4min 5 sec(with lead in/out) a 700mg max Payne with clonecd...

Note that some Fujifilm 24x is rebadged from 16x they placed a sticker over the 1-16x with 1-24x...these have not fared well for me...I get a burn speed of 14-16x...but if i place in a 24x where the label has 1-24x (no sticker over it) burns faster...Nero takes 4min 15 with lead in/out

the plex is too damn media picky...a liteon I had burned the rebadges in 4 min flat at max speed...no decreasing to 16x

Nealh, what firmware version did you use with your Plextor 24X? I understand that for firmware 1.00 the Plextor is not as media picky as the later firmwares. I think it has something to do with the PowerRec II thing.

My Fuji 24X do not have a sticker over the 1-24X and they are made in Japan...

I hope Plextor includes these media in their firmware 1.04 cuz I have a whole bunch of them, and I really would like to be able to use them at 24X not 16X.

Well, since the old days, Plextor has always been known first by the word "Quality" and not "Speed". I remember the days when there were always faster readers around, but not as good as the UltraPlex.

The point here is, sometimes faster isn't necessarily better. PoweRec exists for a reason, and the same for the speed decisions at the end of zones in Z-CLV. If you use good, modern media, certified by Plextor (which means better support in firmware) and recent firmware, I'd say you should not have any problems... even if your neighbour's Lite-On occasionaly appears to reach the finish line a few seconds ahead...
