I just purchased a NEC ND-3450A DVD -+RW burner.  I also purchased some Memorex -R 16x disks to burn and they will not burn ("cannot write medium - incompatible format" using Roxio Disk Copier).  The NEC reads DVDs just fine.  I downloaded a firmware program from the Dell support site (I found out the 3450A is a Dell burner). The program is K34503CQ.exe.  I have a Dell computer running XP.  When I run the firmware update program I get an error that says:  "Target NEC ND-3450A is not found correctly".  Would updating the firmware help with writing the Memorex DVDs?  How do I fix the firmware upgrade problem?

I downloaded the software from the link above and I am still getting the same error "Target NEC ND-3450A is not found correctly".

try to use Binflash to upgrade your firmware

Thanks for your help - I used binflash to upgrade the firmware and my DVD burner works great now.

I just got my first DL DVD, m nec 3450A dvd has burnt 100's of single layer dvd's of all brands without a problem

I put in a Ridata Double Layer 8.5GB DVD+R 2.4X

Under my computer it changes the drive to a cdrom drive and all programs think it's a cd rom.

Any idea what the issue is?  I'm working on getting new media to try out.  I have firmware 1.03c or whatever it is.

mikemar - Look for Verbatim DVD+R DL media and you'll probably have better luck.  In my eyes, Verbatim is all you should buy for DL needs.

I am going to try some that a buddy has and see if that works.

Let's say for arguments sake that it DOESN'T work and I get the same problem

What can I do? I already have the latest firmware

why does it show it as a cdrom drive when I have the DL disc in there?

Have you actually tried to burn to the RiData +R DL media with an application?  Or is the disc simply not recognized when you try to burn?  That is what I am guessing is happening.

well no application will burn (copytodvd, dvd decrypter, nero) since they all see it as a cdrom and not enough room

my computer changes the name of the drive displayed from dvdrom to cdrom drive

so i can't burn it :(

Gotta believe it is the crap RiData DL media.

there is no firmware update listed for the 3450A (it's the 3540 on the site) 103C is the latest for the drive.
