Hi

Does anyone know which media can be used with the HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N?

I've tried to write 2 Arita DVDs (RICOHJPNR01) of data and got a number of read errors when verifying the first disk. On the second I got even more read errors, especially towards the end of the disk.

I am just wondering which media to try on this drive next? The drive supports up to 4x, if this is of any help.

I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has managed to successfully write and verify DVDs of data to this drive. However, I would also like to hear general comments about which media is likely to work.

Give Memorex a try. Used to be all I used and never had a single problem. Fujifilm and TDK also seem to work well for me.

No I have not, I did a search and could find very little media compatibility info for your particular drive. Your best bet is to buy media in very small quantities until you find something that works well for you. It is usually best to stick to a namebrand media, such as Memorex, Fujifilm, or Verbatim for example.

Actually, the Memorex discs are not too bad in writers I have, but I stay away from them if I can, because of problems in the past. I have however used 40 or 50 of them recently without any problem whatsoever in LiteOn and Optorite drives.

Maxell DVD-R rock with this baby, or if you can't find them Verbatim printable DVD-R

PS- beware your drive is very fussy about media don't chance the cheap stuff follow my advice, it'll save you money and grief

This drive is very touchy!! I'm just starting to utilize dvd burning features, cd-r seems less touchy. Her'es my experince, mine hates TDK DVD+R, I mean hates, maybe 1 success out of 20? After awhile your head starts spinning and you begin to think something else is the cause. Don't kill yourself. Trying different media.

Sony DVD+RW work well. I have had success with RW options.

I'm anxious to try out fairliquidizer's suggestions, and get on with the burning.

I'm sad to say that I don't know my current firmware version. Where can I find this info? Didn't see it in General Info...

ok iggy - think I got it!?! From the device information tab of my drives properties under revision: 1.17 --- is this the firmware version?

I've read that some manufacturers have issued revisions, while others have not. I have a HP zd7000 this drive came standard.

Probably. Also I think there is a 1.19 version.

Mitsubishi/Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are an excellent choise.

Coming to this thread way late, but have this OEM installed on my Pavillion zd7000series and have noted something weird of late.

First, it plays both + and - R; thing is, the drive is very touchy; sometimes it will play the +R's consistently, then will have trouble reading them (or spinning up) even if it just played the exact disc moments before; then, it will play the - R's more consistently...can't figure this one out.....firmware I believe is up to date; if it were a drive lens issue, wouldn't it fail to play the discs consistently, rather than play both types inconsistently?

any help would be greatly appreciated.......
