I have a Compaq Presario with a facotry installed CDD4801. It won't do anything except lock my system up. I have tried audio Cd's, Data. Nothing. Someone told me to update the firmware I have Ver 2.0. I downloaded 2.5, but it asked me what to open with and I got nowhere. I tried unzipping, but it didn't do anything. A friend read the ASPI fix for PCRW807, but I looked at that patch it said Widnows 95 only. I am running XP. Any ideas other than yanking the thing and replacing it. Seems as though there are lots of problems with this one from what I have read. When it comes to some of this I am an absolute novice.

Well, Here I am back again. Everything as been fine until I did an update on Realplayer. Then my CRRW locked up everything again. I uninstalled Realplayer thinking it might solve the problem. It didn't. If I try to use the CD or open media player it slows everything down. Question, before I really mess up everything. should I try updating the firmware again? I know just enough on this to be dangerous and feel really stupid!

While it is possible that real player changed the aspi layer, I really doubt this. Sounds like you have just too many applications installed. What are the names of "all" burning application software that you have installed?

As far as I can tell. Windows Media Player, Roxio CD creator (v5.3.5.1). I am not sure when the Real Player installed. I know that sound obutse, but really not sure. Right now that little yellow light is burning on this blasted thing and has been all evening.

Just wondering if you had anymore thoughts on what I should do?

Drusl,

Are you perhaps using AOL? It is automatically installed with newer versions of AOL, and it is a very "persistant" software.

In the disguise of Compuserve. I will make sure to ignore real player in the future, once I get it working.

What suggestion do you have to get my CD/RW working again? Should I reinstall the firmware update? I didn't have to apply the ASPI fix before. I am stumped and don't want to mess up anything, but have got to get this working soon.
Thanks

I would say remove real player, and then "check" your ASPI layer for version.

I have removed Real Player. When I do a search I find only Real Player log. I ran a search on ASPI and found several files. How do I tell which version I have? Sorry for the ignorance, but this is new to me and I don't want to mess things up worse than they are.

I found the following 2 files
ASPI32
C:\aspi\aspifix\aspi ver 1.02.4
Aspichk
C:\api\aspifix\aspi ver 1.0.0.6

Also I just realized I should have been posting these probably to the other topic. I appreciate your patience, it is greater than mine with this thing called a computer.
