Ghost sound when playing CD (Full Version)

When I play a music CD the track is playing twice, a few seconds apart.
If I copy the track to HDD there is no ghosting.
I normally insert the CD and wait for the Wizard to come on screen, offering the choice of copy, play, open, do nothing. Pres play and Windows Media player opens and plays, but there is now this ghosting effect which I have not had before. Looked everywhere but without success.
Any ideas please?

Found the answer. Digital audio was not enabled in Device Manager in Control Panel. Enabling this cured the problem but do not understand why.
