jimshu1 -> Cannot update ASUS DVD E616P2 OEM Firmware (11/28/2004 1:46:21 PM)

I just got this drive. It came with the 1.03 firmware and I tried to flash to the new 1.04. The error message I received was "Drive name does not match".

Received a reply from ASUS:

"Dear Custom :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Penny and I would be assisting you today.

Before you update to firmware v1.04, please make sure the device is the master and only device connecting to the IDE cable, and it works in PIO mode(you could change it in device manager) and the system didn't install any virtual CD-ROM software.
Please enter our website and download the firmware again:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=DVD-E616P2&Type=Latest"

I tried this and it didn't work for me.

I bought my drive from NewEgg as an OEM. The name ASUS doesn't show up on the drive anywhere, nor in Device Manager. It is listed as a DVD E616P2 in DM, and not as an ASUS DVD E616P2, which is what I think the firmware is looking for. I've changed the device name on an older drive with a hacked firmware upgrade, but it involves using a hex editor which I haven't done in years.

Any suggestions or links? Thanks for any replies!

Is this sure for the p2 or the p1?

It is an ASUS OEM DVD-ROM:

The name needs to be

ASUS DVD-E616P2

for the new ASUS firmware.

Thanks.

Did you informed Asus about this?

I tried this and it didn't work for me.

I RMA'd the drive back last night. It isn't worth the hassle and risk to mess with some custom binary to rename it. Going with the Retail version.

Thanks.

Yes this is what you they told you the first time, did you told them again that they are wrong?

Anyway it seems that you have solved it.[:D]

jimshu1,

Would you like to confirm and try below:
1. Make sure the device is the master: which means, connect it to your secondary IDE, and set jumper to Master, and remove other device which is also connected to this IDE bus
2. Make sure it works in PIO mode: which means you need to disable UDMA mode, and change to PIO mode

jimshu1 -> RE: Cannot update ASUS DVD E616P2 OEM Firmware (12/6/2004 6:32:46 PM)

Done it. The drive was the master on the secondary IDE drive and was the only drive on it. The drive's jumper was set to Master. I changed to PIO mode in Device Manager and re-booted.

No Joy. I RMA'd the drive about a week ago and expect a Retail version week end.

Thanks for the reply!
