Arikm20021 -> CDS200 Audio Protection (10/24/2004 8:23:30 AM)

Hello everybody,
I have a big collection of original audio CDs. Several of them have the protection "Cactus Data Shield 200". When i try to backup them with my x24 PlexWriter, the sound of the copy is very bad. According to the hardware reviews the Aopen drive CRW5232 can make a working backup of these CDs. In any case, my CD burner is very old, so i plan on replacing it, but the stores in my country only sell now the 52x24x52 CD burner.
My question is: can this drive also truely backup CDS200 protected audio CDs?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a nice day...

Arikm20021 the CDS200 contains error that most drives cannot correct, my best guess would be to use your Plextor drive combined with Plextools special DAE ripping modes

You can also give it a try with EAC. Try to rip the songs only without the extra info, the last track.

But according to the site the CDS200 protection is virtual errors, so i prefer buying a CD burner which ignores those virtual errors. Not using the software error correction alternative.
It's obvious it's not good to buy CDS200 CDs, but some of them are made by only local labels that decided to use this protection.
Which CD burner other than the three Aopen burners: CRW5232, CRW5120A & CRW2440 can ignore these errors & read the CDS200 CD as if the protection isn't there?

Thanks in advance, Arik.

CDS200 contains two levels of protection, one is the second session that messes up many drives, but there are also CRC errors placed intetionally to prevent CD/DVD drives to rip the discs 100% accuratly, due to their error correction mechanism

Arikm20021 -> RE: CDS200 Audio Protection (10/26/2004 5:53:39 AM)

I refer you to this article:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=Cactus+Data+Shield+200&Series=0&index=8

According to it with CloneCD the AOpen CRW2440 drive is able to make a Safe backup of a CDS200 CD, which means it ignores or doesn't detect the errors. With other drives there are problems in the reading process.

And the conclusion in this review:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=5095&PageId=9

So i need to know if there are any other CD readers/burners other than CRW2440 that have no problems in reading CDS200 CDs.

I don't want a software solution, because i want perfect backups of my CDS200 CDs, not corrected ones. The quality plays a big difference to me.

In any case, thanks for all your help,
Arik.

The article you refear too is rather old and the testing methodology has changed by that time, some assumptions are correct other aren't,

Thanks Emperor. I'll stick to your advice & use PlexTools & also try Iggy's advice to use EAC. You've saved me from buying another CD burner.

Error corrected music is better than no music.

Have a really nice day,
Arik.
