wborchert -> RE: HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N firmware (5/10/2003 11:10:42 PM)

I have a similar problem: it is the same drive (HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N) on a Compaq notebook Presario 904EA. The drive used to work fine but after an installation of other drivers, the function to read Music CDs and regular CD-ROMs stopped. It can read only CDs written with Roxio`s Direct CD. I would assume that I can correct it with the right drivers but I do not find them for the hell of it. Have been to Compaq, Hitachi, driver support sites and whatever.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Does anyone know if the Dell v112 firmware upgrade for this drive can be modified to be used in a Compaq? Thx.

alx2003... serials for commercial application like Nero? [V]

Uh, oh... you'd better edit your post and take those away!

You're gonna hear some harsh word from mods... or from CCampbell - Depending who sees your post first. In future, try to keep your post in the legal side of the line and stay away from The Dark Side.

I personally have never tried to read DVD-RW's on mine. I don't have a DVD-RW burner so no need for me to have a DVD-RW CD, and of course the 'HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N' isn't a DVD writer however, one should be able to use it to at least read a DVD-RW.
Sorry I personally can't help you any further,
Al

MrTotallyNew -> RE: HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N firmware (7/12/2003 9:39:28 AM)

Hi,
I've just gotten this drive for my dell and I'm wondering if any of you know how I can check what firmware version I have. So far it's been working fine with Nero and I've burnt at 16x. I actually stumbled onto this forum while searching for the drivers for this so that windows XP will show it as a DVD/CDRW combo drive rather than just CD drive in the "My Computer" screen.

what if you don't have a floppy drive on your labtop? what driver or firmware can you download so windows xp will regonize the combo drive as one instead of just a cd drive?

darkdemon -> RE: HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4240N firmware (8/12/2003 12:16:35 PM)

This firmware update will only work for a Dell Notebook and not for A Compaq Presario 907AE notebook.
I Tried but it didn't work [:(!][:(!][V]

Too bad, I'm tired of burning at 10x instead of 16x or up to 24x as this drive is rated at. [V]
I haven't tried to run the update for fear it would wreck the drive.

I have a Compaq 2140US with the GCC-4240N and never found an upgrade for the firmware, but I did find a solution to make it burn at 24x;

1) Goto "Device Manager" and select and uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel.
2) Restart the system and let the os to auto-detect the hardware
3) If detected, you should have both options set to "PIO mode".
4) Set to "DMA if available" for both options.
5) Restart the system again
