Is there any way to overclock this drive or change it to a Lite-On firmware? If so, can someone explain it to me step by step?

What firmware revision it has?

I read somewhere that all B drives are Lite-On. It certainly matches the spec of the Lite-On drive... 32/12/40 (wow i just realized i have been typing 48 instead of 40 all this time, sorry)

The ROM version of the drive according to the label is X7S2 (I don't think there are any other version of the firmware out there for this particular model)

Its a LiteoN 100%

Good, now how do I mod/flash it so that it becomes a Lite-On drive (preferably a faster one while I am at it)

Don't remember, possibly you can do your drive a 40X, code65k can help a bit[:)]

Yes, this is a LiteOn. The OEM version of LTR-32123S. And yes, you can rev it up to 40x.

1/ Back up your current firmware! There are no publicly known copies of the X7S2 firmware, which means that if you ever want to revert, you'll have to use your backup copy. To back up your firmware, you will need MtkFlash (IIRC, this drive is old enough that you can't use LtnFW or the other Windows flashers, though I could be wrong about that). There is an extensive MtkFlash guide plus a very handy build-your-own-MtkFlash-command tool at http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm#mtkflash

2/ Please send a copy of your TDK firmware backup to dhc014 so that he could add it to his firmware archive. To send it to him, see: http://dhc014.rpc1.org/contactme.htm

3/ Now, download the XSU1 firmware. You can find it here: http://dhc014.rpc1.org/indexOEM.htm#LTR-32123S

4/ Once you have unzipped this firmware, you will need to use MtkFlash to flash your drive. Once again, please refer to the MtkFlash guide mentioned in step 1.

And that's it!...

I'll be sure to send dhc014 the firmware from my drive.

I have one more question, then I am set, would it be safe to flash the drive with the X7S4 firmware should the flash go bad, or should I use my original backup?

If you choose to revert, you can flash directly back to X7S4. There is no reason to first go back to S2 before going to S4. But it'll still be a good idea to keep S2 around in case you find that you don't like S4 either. But based on what I've heard, I think that you'll like XSU1... ;)

AzN1337c0d3r -> RE: TDK VeloCD 321048 (7/21/2004 11:13:45 PM)

LtnFW does work indeed. Anyways, I've flashed XSU1 on it already, and it reads all my disc and Nero detects it as a LiteOn drive now and it's 40/12/48. Can it get any faster? I see some 48/12/48 firmwares (specifically ZS0R) on the site, and i am wondering if i should touch it.

Update: I just did a Create Disc burn using Nero CD-DVD Speed benchmarking utility. It only reaches up to 32x (but now it has PCAV support at least). Did i do something wrong?

Update: OMG, I think it's my media... need to go out and buy some 40X discs

code65536 -> RE: TDK VeloCD 321048 (7/22/2004 12:13:05 AM)

LtnFW does work? Cool. I stand corrected, then.

No, this drive tops out at 40x. Nothing faster. The fact that it even goes as high as 40x is quite unusual. The final two pieces of a LiteOn drives name traditionally determines its crossflashability. So for this 3S CD writer to be flashed to a 5S CD writer is quite unusual. In fact, to my knowledge, the only two times this has ever been broken is this 3S->5S flash and the 51S->2S DVD writer flash. So be glad that you managed to get it to where it is, as it's not going to get any higher than this.

Maybe i'm reading it incorrectly, but here it says that the LTR-40125S can be flashed to a LTR-48125W
