I have tried to backup Van Morrison - "Moondance" CD. The original now has a scrated though nothing is audible when played on either my mid price Hi-Fi seperates or PC. PC is self build PIII 500, with 3 DVD/CD drives as follows and Creative DVD 5241E Drive, Cyberdrive CW018D CD-R/RW, Matshita CD CR-586, 60Gig DMA33 Hard Drive (45 Gig spare capacity) and 384 meg PC100 SDRAM. PC been with me now for few years but recently new hard drive fitted and fully rebuilt and is always rock steady. (Unless I use Yahoo Messenger - but thats another story!) Problem - and I've never seen it before, but I'm not that experienced! When copying this CD the first 6 tracks copy fine but the last 4 have intermitent clicks (almost as loud as the music) anywhere from max of about 4 seconds apart to one or two every second. I have tried copying on the fly and to hard drive first and with all three programmes and masses of different settings but nothing cures it! However, I have had the most success by copying to hard drive first using DVD in "Secure Mode" with "C2 Error Correction". This reduced the clicks to only just audible (needed to know they were there to hear them really) took 58 mins to copy one track to hard disc and reported lots of errors. I have tried editing the wav file with 2 or 3 programs but on the best copy of the file they have no effect and on the worst copies the filter has to be forced to be so strong that it distorts the rest of the audio. I have tried to find the shape of the "click" using Goldwave editor and using a specific filter for this, but wave shapes are so complex I cant find the wave form that is the click. Maybe I'm just stupid. Sorry this post is so long, but I have spent a thousand more minutes trying to get the "clicks" out than it has taken me to type it or you to read it. Please some-one, help this greatful frustrated (relative) newbie! PS: If all else fails can i put a cable from the output back to the input of my soundcard and copy like that? I imagine there are many reasons (PC performance, sound card performance [Soundblaster PCI64V] interference, possible feedback etc etc) why this can't or shouldn't be tried, but does anyone have any experience of this method?

I would suggest to lower down the reading speed to 1x and get a good reader (like TEAC drives). That may reduce further or even eliminate clicks Visit www.cdrinfo.com - The Recording Authority

You state "the original now has a scrated." Do you mean a scratch? If so here are 2 more options. I have had excellent success utilizing MusicMatch Plus V 7.2 writing to wave files, use error correction, set retries to 10 or greater, use digital, and set DAE speed as low as possible. This works almost all of the time. The second option is software from Creative Labs (Creative Jukebox) it has a feature called "remove Pops". If the scratch is too deep, nothing is going to fix the problem. You can also try some aftermarket disc resurfacing tools that are available, I've used them also as a last resort. -Peace-

Thanks for suggestions so far! Sadly not much luck. My feed back to suggestions so far! John - The current scratch is one single scratch and not audible on good Hi-Fi or PC. So I don't think one single scratch should cause the variation in frequency of clicks that I am getting ("4 seconds apart to one or two every second") MP3Mogule - The Creative with error correction ("took 58 mins to copy one track") How much slower should I go? John - Sorry the title should have included EAC. I read all the forums first so downloaded EAC and tried that before writing to the forum. It was with EAC and ("Secure Mode" with "C2 Error Correction") that took 58mins to extract one track. Also I know TEAC CDRs are really rated but funds (wife and kids to support) wont agree. As before, the best extraction so far is the Creative DVD drive; set in "Secure Mode" and "C2 Error Correction" I tested all 3 drives with EAC and it was EAC that suggested that best extraction of the three would be with this drive. I hope no-one gets offended by my aparent negative reply - I don't mean it to be. I really am desperate for help! One friend has suggested extracting at 48k instead of 44.1k or changing the ASPI layer driver! I don't seem to have the option to go higher than 44.1k and have no idea what an ASPI layer does or how I check what driver I have or change it. Any more suggestions or help greatfully received. PS. What about my idea of recording by looping back the sound card. I know this is likely to be far lower quality but is it a completely really stupid idea as a last resort?

It's possible that disc is copy protected, and the protection is causing the pops/clicks. Do you have a line in on your sound card? If so you could play it and do a line in rip with your favorite program. -Peace-

Apologies to all! Seems that the clicks are oin the original! Played through friends Hi-Fi (bit more revealing than mine) and listened through headphones they can also just be heard. He then carried out his patented disc cleaning method. Lick (yuck) the disc and rub really hard all over with soft cotton cloth. It has worked! I am amazed! Though I don't know what it will do for the life of the disc. Seems he also removes small scratches like this. He also ignores all advice about cleaning discs from centre to edge. He says this may be less risky for general cleaning but if very small scratches can be heard only rubbing across the scratch will clean/stroke remove it! I know sounds really "heathen" method but its worked!
