I want to buy a DVD-rom. Which model should i chose in order to copy audio cds proteced from coping them on PC. Is there any DVD that can handle coping protected audio cds. Where can i find (except of this page) info on DVD-roms availibility to copy protected cds?

There are *NO* DVD-ROM's avaliable at the present time, that can handle the majority of CD-DA protections. Some can use software 'tricks' (for example, EAC), but none (or no good DVD-ROM's, e.g. Toshiba, Lite-On, Pioneer, Sony [BTC]) can recognise Key2Audio/CDS-200; or I'd be aware of it, and own/buy it for that reason

For audio protections [CD-DA], a Plextor UltraPlex 40X or a PleXWriter (24x or 40x) are the best options...

An option even better than Clint's
Toshiba 1502 dvd reader + Yamaha 3200e 24x12x40 CDRW
As the Yamaha has Audio Master built in you can read all about it at
http://www.cdrinfo.com and read the review at the moment it is the best for doing audio and protected games!!!

I just read that Key2Audio is now easy to get around, simply by using a black felt marker to block out the edge of CD that has the bad unreadable info. It then becomes readable in your PC.

Hey Laffin Assassin your nice yamaha sollution couldn't Digital Audio Extract CDS-100 and Mediacloq while the ultraplex cd-rom players can do both and the plextor drives can do CDS-100 and rip most of the contents of mediacloq.

So Clint allready said the best option for the reading part.
The Plextor Ultraplex 40x cdrom player. Now you can discuse the burner.
The Plextor 40 shows allround to burn pretty good but is soon speeded down and has varirec.
The Yamaha has Audio Master which is a way better technique as varirec I personnally think. But then again most tests do show that the plex 40x is better compatible with media and overall burns disc's with better quality. Now less errors is better.

As you can see both have there pro's and con's. I would say let the users decide. Personally if I had the money I would go for the Ultraplex and the Lite On. Then I may not have these audio quality features however I do have got a perfect SD 2.51 copier and still had some money left.

Best option for protected audio when using was some old Creative Model. Which could do CDS-200 (perfect) + Key2audio & some tracks for disc's protected with mediacloq. However I don't know ther Original manufacturer (Since Creative is most times to lame to make good products themselfs.) and this thing is old and not sold any more.

No body said the Yamaha could do both I have not tried it BUT the Toshiba can and the best thing about it, 48x and it plays DVD films too and in the UK it is half the price of the Plex 40. And if you have a look at Clone CD website and see Which is the best Recommended Reader Toshiba of course and I will agree with that.

It's Nice to be Importent But is more importent to be NICE!!!

Toshiba DVD-ROM drives *CANNOT* handle various audio CD protections...

But they are the best for data protections, along with the UltraPlex

Hey so can my Lite-On LTD-163 16X/48X DVD-ROM. But it also can do DAE at 50X!!! Tosh's are slow audio extracters...

Hey,

I have managed to rip all the files off of the J to tha L-O remix album. I am pretty sure that it was protected with Key2audio. I am running XP Professional and this is how I did it.

I put the CD in and it takes a bit longer to detect. When it does start up Windows Media PLayer pops up but nothing happens. When i explore the cd contents and try to play the cda tracks individually I get some error message. So I left the CD in (the cd must be left in all the time) and I did a sysytem restore to an earlier date. Once that that was sone I then undid the restore so my computer went back to its original settings. Once that was done I opened "My Computer" and double-clicked the drive with the audio CD in it. And guess what, the cd played like normal and I was able to rip the songs using the facility in media player. But once the CD was re-inserted it went back to normal and nothing happened. I tried it before with clonecd etc to no success. I have tried the alternative method on several occasions and it has worked everytime. How the hell it works I don't know but I don't care. It works!

That creative you were talking about is a 121032e (firmware 1.08)
It does Key2Audio no sweat. Aswell as safedisk v2.51 without any problems. I've made sucessful copies of both that work in a variety of drives. This drive however is'nt a rebranded panasonic as some others were.
Not so lame afterall.

Your are right your Creative Labs 121032E is a re-badged Plextor not a panasonic!

With the creative I purposed about a 6x DVD player don't know who is ther original manufacturer. Some say that it is originally made by Pioneer. Since ther original post was about DVD-players that could handle audio protectections.


Offcourse there are also 2 Creative burners both made by Plextor which can also do CDS and Key2audio and Mediacloq partially.

And Laffin Assassin you are right that you didn't mentioned that one of your option could copy audio protections. However if someone asks about a best option to copy these than give the best option and not some quality option that is really good but cannot do the points the original poster wants.

hmm. Maybe I should really test the combo plextor since this might be the first DVD-player that can actually read any audio-protection.
