stone2 -> firmware update (5/7/2002 4:02:11 PM)

i recently posted a thread about getting rid of pops and crackels when ripping cds to mp3 and some suggestions included updating the fimware for my Ricoh MP7200A. I have just read the firmware updateing instructions and there is a warning that if it makes the drive unusable there is no way to return it to the old state and will have to go in for a repair. This sounds rather scary!
If this happens can I just roll back windows me to another time using system restore? will this fix work if the update corrupts the drive? and how do i find what fimware version is loaded at present?

No, that will not work. Firmware works just like flashing your BIOS. There is a flashible ROM inside your drive that can be upgraded "Flashed" just like your BIOS.

Two things. One if the damn thing doesn't do what you want it to anyway go for the upgrade or chuck it. Second, I am not totally sure that the drive would be a loss if the firmware went haywire. Talk to some of the guys around here they can tell you how to do it blind folded. Just make sure that you do it exactly the way they (Ricoh)tells you to and you will be fine. Flash it. If it brakes you'r no worse off IMHO!
