cleopard -> skipping CD player (4/23/2006 6:06:38 PM)

I bought a Sony shelf unit about a year ago and has always sounded very good.  However, a few weeks ago, it just started skipping, mostly backwards, but sometimes forwards.  It doesn't matter what CD I put in.  I've had several CD players over the years and not once have I had one do this, and I've never found it necessary to use one of those disk cleaners, but I went ahead and bought one just to see, and it hasn't helped a bit.  It doesn't seem that stability would be a problem as has been in the same place ever since I bought it.  I hesitate to take it somewhere to have someone look at it because it might cost almost as much as the machine itself, but it's less than a year old and I hate to get rid of it.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Sony has long been plagued with laser problems.

I think perhaps the lens has become dirty and needs to be cleaned.  If you do not feel comfortable cleaning the laser lens you can take it somewhere (yes it will probably cost as much as a new one), or you can purchase a new unit.
