LiteOn's 1693S drive really choked on the 16x disc when I reviewed the drive.  And this was on media provided by LiteOn!  The rest of the performance, including CDR writing was really decent in the end.  The write quality was decent at the 4x speed on both plus and minus discs.  I was also pleasantly surprised at how well the DVD+R DL turned out.

I don´t really sure than anyone buy a 16x-writer for burning 4x [;)]

Results at higher speeds are welcome [:)]

You are right.  I doubt most users will be happy with a 16x burner that is limited to 4x.  I didn't have any 8x media to see those results.  Also, a new firmware was released recently that hopefully has improved things.  I also think a higher quality disc would have helped as well.

I know that the Liteon´s are having good quality with high-quality-media, but the other burners do well with good media, too.

All I'm saying is that while the Plextor 740A is a really good drive on some tasks, it has its weaknesses as well.  I'm sure you realize that no drive is perfect.  Everytime these companies get something right, another part of it falls apart.

Plextor 740 = Benq 1640

I know that no drive is perfect. But If I had the choice between a drive that only have good results with high-quality media and a drive that performs well with almost all media, I´ll take that drive.

Scour1:

First of all, let me see that I have both drives and have actually used both.  Therefore, my comments are not theoretical, but based on actual use on scans of discs from the same batches of media.  Many folks don't like LiteOn drives as of late.  I'm indifferent to these two brands as I have owned them both before.

The Plextor 740A is an outstanding reader of both CD's and DVD's.  It writes DVD+R media very well at 16x.  so far, it has proved weak at dual layer burning, and on DVD+RW tasks.

Which is the better drive?  I think it depends on what you plan on doing.  I would say that between CDR and DVD+R writing, that composes over 90% of what I personally do.  The Plextor 740A covers those needs very well.

However, as a great all around drive, it falls little short.

With the Liteon you can make quality-scans with Cdspeed and Kprobe. Did you burned media with both drives and scan?

digitaldoc -> RE: Review of Liteon 1693S (7/20/2005 6:36:49 PM)

Yes Scour1, I have my scans from the LiteOn in my review.  It is in my signature.  The Plextor 740A scans are in progress.  I am basing my statements on my preliminary data.

Scour1 -> RE: Review of Liteon 1693S (7/20/2005 7:28:28 PM)

Hello!   I read your review, nice job.   But I saw a mistake you made by testing burn-quality. See those high spikes? Cdspeed depends the Quality-score (which is in your test very low with most discs) mainly on PIF-max-value.   With Liteon-drives you should scan at only 4x and the spikes are not so extremely high.

digitaldoc -> RE: Review of Liteon 1693S (7/20/2005 9:34:49 PM)

I am glad you enjoyed the review.  It correlates very well with the review here on CDR Info.
Yes, I am aware of the preference for scanning at 4x with CD Speed.  I stated in the article that this was due to time constraints and getting the review up in a reasonable amount of time.  While the quality score numbers may not be that useful, the scans are.

Scour1 -> RE: Review of Liteon 1693S (8/6/2005 2:55:56 PM)

Nice review of Plextor 740, digitaldoc. But you should call the errors with DVD-media not C1 and C2 but PI and PIF :)
And do you remember about 4x scanning with Liteon-drives? Then you don´t have this ugly spikes that lowers the quality-index of Cdspeed.
I think now you´re prefer the 740 over the 1693s?
A friend has the Benq 1640 and he have problems with DVD RW, too. Maybe the PUH of that writer have problems with RW?

digitaldoc -> RE: Review of Liteon 1693S (8/6/2005 11:45:54 PM)

Both drives have their merits.  For reading all discs, and writing DVD+R media at 16x, the Plextor 740 is the clear leader.  However, the Plextor was poor at writing to the DVD+R DL media, and DVD+RW.   Notice, I did not award Plextor's drive the "LD Approved" designation.  The LiteOn, while having issues at max write speeds, was a more balanced, although slower drive.

I'll try to do the scans at 4x next time, although it's only an 8x reader so there shouldn't be much difference.

The average of PI and PIF should show not much differences when scanning @4x, but like I said, the ugly spikes should  be disappear and you get a better quality-score. Some guys said it´s because the Liteon scan 4x in CLV, but higher speeds in CAV.
