What is the best or most reliable plyaer that would play DivX Xvid and DVDs plus support subtitles in .srt .idx etc.. any text based subtitle files?

I am in search of one.

welcome to the party, we have tested some DivX players, none of them is 100% ok, maybe kogos can tell us if the Philips 720 supports .srt, .idx subtitles...

Check at the front page, the Waitec Vision HTX also we are testing KISS DP-558, which doesn't seem to support subtitles

ive got a DVD/VCR combo from samsung the dvd-v540, it does divX and Xvid and the latest firmware update supports .smi subs. nice machine.

KISS DP-558P can playback DivX/XVid with Subtitles
IODATA AvelLink Player2 supports .SRT subtitles with the latest firmware upgrade too

I don't know abt subtitles, just check out the links I gave u, it supports many character sets. I've a XviD rip of Troy and it plays fine. Its a gr8 system for the price, decent sound and many features.
