Angel O_Death -> WinME copy protected (from dell computer) (7/8/2003 1:54:54 PM)

Ok, i'm having a hard time trying to make a backup of this CD. I've tried making an ISO and burning from that. I've also tried a straight copy from CD to CD. And each time i burn a CD, everything works fine, except the CD is not recognized! Windows explorer says it's empty, but Alcohol 120% and Nero both say it's not. I've wasted a total of 5 CD's so far. 2 in nero and 3 in Alcohol. I've checked the ISO (and an image in alcohols format)by loading them into a virtual cd drive and they worked fine. So why won't the real CD i've burnt work? The drive is an NEC 7900A. It works fine and i havn't had any problems with it before.

Hmm, no edit function?

Anyway, i just tried that program Clony XL. The result was None or Unkown. Whenever i tried to burn from CD to CD in Nero it would tell me that the CD is copyright protected. so i know it's got some form of it...

Nero always says that a disc is copyrighted.

As for your troubles, what kind of media are you using?

The WindowsME disc is "not" copy protected. Microsoft OS's are not copy protected at all. You'll need to make an image of the disc on your hard-drive, then burn it to disc with DAO (Disc At Once). This should resolve your issue. Burning CD to CD is not recommended at all. Did you elect to "read sub-channel data" in your ISO image that you made? If all else fails, use CloneCD... I just tested it on a WindowsME disc, and it worked fine. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of Alcohol to test, but the CloneCD copy worked great.

Thanx for your reply. I've tried everything you stated (except clonecd). It's not a regular WinME disc. This one came with a Dell computer and as such is meant to only be used on that computer. So i believe that they have a copyright protection on it because of that.

I will give CloneCD a try though.

The media i am using are 700MB CompUSA discs. They burn fine with everything else i have tried.

Woohoo! I just tried CloneCD and it worked great! [:D]

Still irks me that i wasted 5 CD's with nero and alcohol. GRR![:(!]

Glad that you have it resolved, on the note that it's protected because it's Dell, this is also not true. This only means that it has Dell specific drivers for your computer on the disc, and nothing more.
