Officially, a bad firmware upgrade is not covered by the drive's warranty. Most of the manufacturers suggest users not to upgrade firmware if the device works well. However, in most cases, you will be able to use a valid warranty to have your drive replaced after a bad firmware flash.. If I were you I would upgrade the firmware since the negative effects are not very common. Make sure your PC is running during the upgrading process.

A newer firmware version normaly fix bugs and problems, while it can improve the writing quality on media. For your LG make sure you install it as secondary master, according to the manufacturer. There are no bad firmwares, in most cases, nd if there are you can return the drive saying it is not working, don't have to mentioned you flashed it.[;)]
